Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How much fitness will I lose? 19 days off the bike

Starting next week, I won't be able to run/ride a bike for 19 days (vacation). I have a duathlon about a week after I come back, and i'm wondering how much fitness i'll lose.

I ride 4-5 days a week, and run a couple of days a week, in preparation for my duathlon. I'm worried that i'm going to lose all of my fitness during my trip. My strength is on the bike, and i'm only a weak-average runner at best. So, will I see a big difference in my fitness when I get back?

Why can't you run on vacation? Running shoes, socks, shorts, maybe shirt. Not exactly packing up a bike and its gear... And 20 minutes for a run is not hard to make time for.

Like Colin said, why can't you run? As for losing any ability, it depends on what you do. If you do nothing but sit on your butt and eat crap for the next two weeks then yeah, you will see a drop in performance. But if you stay active and eat at least semi well you pry won't really lose much of anything.

To the point of the previous posters, sounds like spending 19 days running would probably benefit you greatly for the event, and help mitigate your loss of cycling fitness.

Agree with above. Sneak in a quick 30-45 minute run daily and you will probably not lose much.

You will lose all the fitness you've built up and you are going to have to start from the beginning. You will also get fat!

But, really, making time to run is not going to kill you. When you state "I WON'T be able to run" because of a "vacation" is a lousy excuse. Seriously??? Are you leaving your legs at home that your ability to run is totally gone? You need to take a nice healthy shot of HTFU!

Well then you're competing on that duathlon to be the last guy to cross the line. Just save yourself the headache and don't enter the race. While you're enjoying yourself, the contenders are out bustin their balls training. That pretty much sums up your commitment to the sport.

I ride/lift almost 6 out of 7 days of the week. I cannot imagine myself having 2 consecutive days off. Even one day of not doing anything physical drives me nuts and I don't compete on anything at the moment.

I believe they have a treadmill and stationary bike up there... Probably no swimming pool, but OP is racing a duathlon, not triathlon, after the vacay...
