Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

tour of the moon

d'jever see the movie American Flyers? the part where they race and kevin costner has the aneurism, that was filmed here in fruita/grand junction on the colorado national monument.

the monument is a beautiful ride, pretty fun, if you have never done it, and you wanna travel somewhere to ride, i suggest it.

so, this year they are doing a "tour of the moon" fun ride.

https://www.tourofthemoon.com/

i have nothing to do with this ride (i'm gonna ride in it though, even though i ride it anyway) i am just posting this as a "hey check this out" sorta thing.

How about an American Flyers classic 3 day stage race. Same circuits. Mustaches optional. Neutral wheel support from chicks in short shorts. Somebody get on that.

The race in American Flyers is modeled off an actual race, the Red Zinger Classic, which became the Coors Classic.

The spiritual successor would be the U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge.

Thanks for the heads up! That is far enough out to plan for.

Speaking of riding in Moon-like terrain, I have always wanted to ride from Grand Junction through Utah and take I-50 through Nevada. I have driven The Loneliest Road a few times, and aside from sparse vegetation, it feels like the moon.

Yeah, we know.

Last year's pro challenge was a snooze fest. Like pro's on a recovery tour.

We need some excitement.

This should make for some excitement

https://www.usaprocyclingchallenge.co...s/2012/stage-3

certainly not a recovery ride.

The profiles are fairly irrelevant. It's only hard if the riders contest it. And with that much real estate after the last summit there's a good chance we still get a sprint finish of some sort.

True. However, I think the climb up Independence Pass to 12,000 feet is going to be enough to bust up that day. And while there's a way to go into Aspen form the top, it's almost all downhill, and pretty twisty as I recall.

So anyone who gets away over the top can likely hold the advantage on the descent. Last year that stage ended up with a group of 6 staying away.

Possibly, but if I were to go to a race it wouldn't be that one. I don't want to see Tdf podium winners riding to the level of continental guys.
