Schwinn LeTour Sport, good buy?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Schwinn LeTour Sport, good buy?

I'm the guy who chimes in with snarky remarks about downtube shifters, Campy NR components and lugged steel from the 70's. My go fast bike is this;

I dont have much problem keeping up with the Saturday and Sunday morning road warriors that amass on the the North shore of Chicago. I keep up but thats about it. I have never been one that thinks the bike has much to do with ones performance but I would sort of like to fit in more with the regulars on these morning group rides. And basicly the weekends is the only time I ride. Maybe I get a weekday ride in on occasion.

So whats the consensus on this;

Has the retro look I like and seems to be a very good deal. I test road the steel version at a LBS and it was fantastic. But for the same price I can get the Sport version with better components from BD.

Just got back from morning group ride. The Reynolds performed admirably. Still thinking of the Schwinn. Hope BD doesnt sell out of them before I can wrangle up the money.

Maybe I should have started a thread with "What to buy?, Colnago or Felt". But that's not what I am interested in. Is there another forum for the average weekend rider(Fred).

I would think you'd prefer the Legacy for $200 more:

Reynolds 520 frame and fork, 105 components.

You're pretty comfortable with using the LBS as a testing ground and then buying it from BD?

Yeah, Bicycling magazine has a forum.

I was seriously considering the Legacy before buying something else.

The one you posted looks very nice. There is a Gravity with similar parts for a tad less, but if you have tested the geometry of the Schwinn and like it, then go for it.

And you have a nice riding steel bike, so getting an aluminum / carbon fork bike makes sense. You can compare and grow fond of the different rides for different reasons. My primary rides are aluminum, and the rumors of their harshness are greatly exaggerated.

I have looked at that one and like it quite a bit. I think it's a good deal.

Sort'a looks like the Schwinn Fastback frame. If so, they've received a lot of glowing feedback. Light and "lively"
DT shifters are fine on flat terrain. But brifters are so much nicer on curvy, hilly roads if you like to maintain a tempo.

I love this answer. So his suggestion is that you stick with the non-Sports model and it's okay if you're settling for cheaper components. It's just your money. It's all about LBS loyalty (and markups). If you can't negotiate a lower price, then it's a no-brainer.

As for me, I'm kinda liking the Legacy...
