Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

10 speed campy common problem?

Heading out this morning get to the end of my street switch to big ring and clunk. The f/d breaks. The clamp holding to the seat tube just split. This is the second time this has happened to me. Same exact spot. Is this a common problem? I know it had nothing to do with over tightening. Now to try and find a replacement.

This happened on a friend's bike awhile back. Maybe you could try a braze on FD with an other-than-Campy band clamp.

I don't know if it's a common problem or not. But as shelbyfv suggested, you might get a braze on FD and an adapter clamp. I've used that solution a few times with great success.

I still have the first one I broke. I think I'll mail them both back.

campy used the same clamp on all models from the mid 8spd era all the way through 10spd. ive been around dozens of them and have never seen one break. are you sure there isnt something on the seat tube causing it? is it slightly out of round?

I have been using a Campy 10 speed since 2006 and have never had a problem with the front DR. As others have suggested, I would call Campy.

Same comment as Carbon Unit. Have used a 10 speed Record clamp on since 2006 with no problems.

My comment and only that as a Campy guy who has used both clamp designs...never seen one break. Yes onesies occur in nature but two in a row is rare. So if not overtorquing as you say which could stress the band...my guess is...its set up error...cable pull past the stop or cage to ring interference that is causing the failure.

I've had a Veloce up front since 2008 with no problems. But I've also had no reason to remove it since I bought the bike. Also unless I travel to some hills I rarely use it so mainly it just sits there.

I think if this was a chronic problem this board would have heard about it.

Set up once by me and once by a shop I trust. I'll find a replacement and see what happens the third time around. I will send the broken ones back to campy and see what they say. Not claiming product failure. Maybe they will send me a sticker.

Measure the seat tube diameter all the way around and make sure it is not dented or ovalized for some reason. Is is a longshot but so is breaking multiple clamps.
