Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling and Tennis

Totally into cycling alhough last Sunday a girl asked me if I played tennis and would like to play. I said I do and ran out bought a Babolat Drive Z mid racquet and we played (in 94 degree heat).
I am totally into it, great xcercise although a totally different muscle group used. I now have 5 racquets to go with my 9 bikes.

Anyone also plays tennis and at what level?

I played competitively in high school and college. Tennis is a fantastic sport, but requires years of technical training to develop the skills to play it well - so much variety in shot making. As exercise it is like doing wind sprints, a bit like basketball in both regards. Cycling is a lot more like running, where the focus is mostly on physical conditioning. The top tennis pros are amazing athletes, who generally started playing seriously when they were little kids. Have fun!

mpath, I know I know but the first one I bought was cheap, then I bought a Wilson pro model and it was great, then must have another if someone wants to play who doesn't have one (3), along comes Volkl PB1 with this really cool technology (must have) and one more for safe keeping.
Keep in mind, the most expensive racquet out there is only like $250-300.........hell my pedals cost that much.

When I was 16-17 years old I would do my clubs Sunday morning 50 mile training ride. We would usually do it in about two hours. Then I would play tennis for 2-3 hours in the afternoon. Didn't even phase me. Ah, to be young again.

Used to play tennis a lot, topped out at 4.5

Got back riding to improve fitness for tennis. Then decided I liked riding better than tennis

Not to be rude, but can I call you on it? Are you really that great at tennis, maybe you are but just prefer those racquets? All these racquets, may be expensive, but by no means "pro" racquets. All the ones you have said, the Volkl and the Bab are geared toward the beginners group of players. I play tennis, 3.5-4.0 range, and use the Bab 2012 PDRs. So I had to ask, that is all, no offense or anything. And like you, I have 5+ racquets as well, usually from upgrading every so years they come out with a new model. But I usually stick with a pair of matched frames and just stay from there until I need to upgrade to something better or something. Now as a bike rider, I am a newbie at that, way too expensive of a sport for me to get into. I just have a basic SS and that is about it. I got caught here reading the interesting bike stories while riding and came across this.

No, of course not I'm not good, just don't like using cheap stuff. No offense taken anywhere. If a 2012 Bab PDR is a Pure Drive Roddick, I'll get it. I used a $45 prince junk stick and even in the sweet spot it was like a badminton racquet.
I do want to become good.

Pretty avid tennis player. 5.0 usta , play roughly 3 times a week. Just a fyi, the racquet type/ brand means nothing when judging ability.

Only cycling is acceptable. That's why we ostracize the triathletes.

But if it's for a girl, we can look the other way this once.

That's the sort of thing I tell people when I direct them to the bike shop that sponsors my team. Yeah, really nothing less than a Colnago C59 with Campy EPS shined to a sparkle with the sweat of Ernesto himself will work on the multi-user trails in this town.

much better advice would have been to buy a single hybrid racquet, and put the rest to hiring a very good instructor.

I still use a set of old Wilson ProStaff 6.0 rackets, 85s for practice, 95s for matches. I'm about as good at tennis as I ride a bike up a hill ... in other words, I suck!

If you are serious about sticking with tennis, and you want to play in leagues, get yourself one of the lifetime USTA memberships, especially if you are young. They don't advertise it, but if you call and ask about it, they will sell it to you. I'm sure the price has gone up since I purchased mine. It was $400 about ten years ago. You also get a lifetime subscription to Tennis magazine. It's about on the same level as Bicycling magazine, (worth about half an hour before chucking it into the trash).

Volosong- Yes, I intend to get lessons and find a balance between cycling and tennis.
I also understand that, like biking, its the motor not the bike...................hence, my new Wilson BLX, K-Force. blah blah Babolat Aero pro drive, Volkl Power bridge 1 is nothing if you can't hit the ball.

I'll get there.
