Another beauty from Craigslist (A little itti-bitty crack on the toptube)

I saw this on SoCal Craigslist.

Can he sell a carbon frame with a crack on the toptube liability-wise?

Of course he can sell it, why wouldn't he be able to?

Did you read the listing? "It's in great shape except there's a little crack on the top".

I don't think I ever seen a bike listed on CL that was described in any condition worse than "very good".

I like the way he says that the cannondale rep and lbs say the bike is safe and the crack only goes through the first layer or two of the carbon, lol. Oh man.

Actually, if the guy could produce paperwork from his local Cannondale reb/dealer that cleared the bike, and were willing to negotiate some on the price it would certainly be worth consideration. Send it to Calfee and have them look it over and fix it if you were that concerned about it (and could save on the price to help pay for it).

I'd be very surprised if the Cannondale rep were willing to warranty a damaged frame in writing for sale to a third person.

I have a friend who does carbon repair. Most of his bikes were bought cheap because they were cracked or broken.

Who is talking about warranty? I am talking about backing his claim that it is certified safe.

meh. it's obviously a bald-faced lie, no point in doing legwork to prove it.

I would offer 300 and then send the bike to repair, something that small wont be more than 150.

You put something in writing and that is a promise that it is safe (or a warranty if you like). It is not going to happen.

Do you really believe a Cannondale rep would give a pass of any kind (written or otherwise) to a cracked frame for riding?

Did anyone look at the pic of the crack? I does look cosmetic. I've ridden bikes with worse that that.

I would take a shot and offer $250 or so, up to 300 as another member had posted. It does not look too bad, cannot even tell or notice it. And it looks like something of paint, but hey, who know... I live to far away anyway.

If I could get it for a good price, I would slap on some regular/decent pieces and make it into a SS and ride it all around campus.

Really does look cosmetic, I love that frame and would definitely take a look at it if loser.

Even if its not cosmetic it could be fixed for a couple hundred bucks.

Get if fixed and you would have about $550 into it. Sounds good to me for a frame that would sell for $1000.

So I guess this damage to my downtube would discourage people, eh?

Once I removed the material around it, this was the extent of the damage. I filled it and painted it. I have about 2000 miles on it since the repair.

If that bike showed up on my local CL in my size, I might consider it...except for that silly BB30 thing.
