Strava made me crash

I like Strava.
Mainly because it's a fast and convenient way to track my miles/speeds. Punch button on Android "on", punch "off" when done. Then off to the shower and to get a snack. A bit quicker than a spreadsheet cross-referenced with the cyclo-computer, and it has a neat little map and an approximation of calorie burn.
Aside from that, I don't really care about the other bells/whistles/"prizes"/etc.

Irony and satire---more and more becoming obscure literary devices. If I were the ruler of the world, no kid would graduate from high school without reading some Jonathan Swift.

OP, if my assumption is wrong correct me...
Do a lot of people on Strava go all out on their first attempts at a KOM? I'm speculating but it sounds like OP went for it hard on his first attempt and didn't know the road well enough. This is probably not wise and not something Strava can do anything about.

I guess I'd want them to be able to relieve pressure if I was having swelling inside my head. Drill a hole and whatnot.

I am not on Strava. When I saw the OPs road rash, I cringed and said ouch. Then I saw his hairy legs and realized that I am not the only hairy legged monster on these forums.

It's a lot better than not having holes drilled in your skull.
I built a self-trepanning rig that I use after bike wrecks in which my helmet splits and I can't remember how I got home.
I'll sell you plans for five dollars.

As an attorney, I suggest you do the following:
1. delete this thread immediately;
2. get to an emergency room;
3. never tell anyone you feel ok;
4. demand a CT scan, physical therapy, and everything else you can think of (just watch an episode of House, and ask for whatever they do on the show);
5. send me your email and I send you an Engagement Agreement;
6. I'll send Strava an email which, of course, will reference that you never saw the small print post they put up after their last "episode" which contained modified disclaimer language;
7. and of course I'll mention that we are willing to settle for a couple of new carbon bikes (1 for you, 1 for me) completely decked out with powermeters, Zipps, etc....
Good luck!!!
Seriously, you could have been hurt much worse. Heal up quickly!!

- Oh, and by the way, for all the others, I had the distinct impression that the OP realizes he screwed up, and was blaming Strava with his tongue firmly in his cheek.

I'm sorry to hear about the crash and that you're alright despite some gnarly injuries. It's not strava's fault though, it's the users.

I'm pretty sure you made up that whole Strava story to cover up your silly clipless pedal fall.....and also so you could post a picture of your nipple.
(Not that there's anything wrong with that)

I guess it depends on how likely you are to do something stupid to impress people. I'm on Strava and I love it. It helps me define some places to do intervals and gives me motivation to do them. I don't recall ever doing anything dangerous to beat a segment time or anything like that.

Do yourself a favor & guy checked out!
Anytime you take a blow to your head, its wise to get it checked out, yo may not fell anything now, but it can effect you later.
+1!

Concussions can indeed be fatal, sometimes hours after the initial event. In addition, there is no way for a layperson, or even medical professionals, to rule out an internal bleed without a CT or other diagnostic scan. I know of an individual who was "OK" at the accident scene who went to the clinic two days later when her arm went numb and tingly only to find that she had been walking around with a spinal fracture that put her in a halo brace.

I really like Strava for any number of reasons, but IMO the whole idea of segment rankings is a bit flawed for a number of reasons:
1. The app assumes that everyone is riding alone. This makes the results meaningless as you're often comparing the results of a group ride to someone riding alone. I can personally state that often the "KOM" time of segments in my area were set by people riding five people back in a paceline (often with me pulling ).
2. You can't normalize for environmental conditions like wind, traffic lights, dogs jumping out in front of you, heat etc. This is a particular problem if you live in a busy area. Many segments in my area require you to go through several traffic lights, meaning that your result is dependant on how many lights you hit. WTF? Not sure what the point of that is.
3. The app doesn't put the segment in the context of the overall ride the user was doing. Someone doing a segment at mile 50 of a 75 mile ride shouldn't be measured against someone who who went out with the sole purpose of setting a KOM time on the same segment after a ten minute warm-up.
As a result, many guys in my group take breaks before segments, get lead-outs, and plan routes carefully etc just to get a KOM. It's silly.
I'm not a complete curmudgeon, segments can make a group ride more fun as people push the pace over given segments, work together to get times etc. That's all good fun and makes the feature worthwhile. It's just that we shouldn't pretend that the resulting rankings actually tell you anything about the rider being ranked.
