Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Di2 or not?

Thinking about jumping the gun and buying Di2, was at Mikes Bikes the other day, and one of the workers told me "once I go electronic, I will never go back" any of you guys buy Di2 and agree?

Will the milliseconds make a difference in your race results. Will you really enjoy riding that much more?

I'm thinking about doing it I'm 58, 6' 1" and 225 lbs (looking to get to 200). I ride for: 1) the experience of coursing through the sylvan fields adjacent to my suburban enclave (2 miles from my house and you're in the country, and I mean the country - Civil War markers abound), and; 2) the exercise value (1,800 calories burned on an average ride). Not having to screw around with derailleur adjustments will only make my experience better, and fortunately for me, cost isn't a consideration. I have a 2012 Felt Z5 with 105 components and wheels upgraded to Boyd Vitesse, but I'm seriously thinking of doing my own custom build to include Di2, and relegating the Felt to my backup.

The milliseconds are irrelevant; precise shifts that don't require weekly adjustments to my derailleurs will indeed allow me to enjoy riding that much more.

Am I missing something (serious question)?

A long time ago I questioned the need for indexed shifting, and I was wrong. Maybe in 25 years I'll be wrong about this too.

+1 on this. I adjust my RD only when I change the chain or the cables.

I would love to have DI2 but the $$$ is out of my budget. So, I will stick with mechanical until the price of electronic and mechanical are closer.

I have it on my main road bike and on my TT bike. It's great stuff. Is it indispensable? No. Would I want another main road bike without it in the future? Unlikely. And a bunch of the guys I talk to who have ridden it for a while also think it's that good. I have another road bike with a great mechanical group (Ultegra 6700). But Di2 is the shiznit.

Isn't that how it always goes? The stuff that's great is always too pricey. So it hurts when you buy it, after you have it, you're glad you dropped the coin. That's how I feel about it, that's how everybody I know who has it seems to feel, and they would not only buy it again, they don't want another bike without it. I buy one main road bike like once every 4-5 years, so is it worth a couple grand more to get it the way I want it? I ride a lot, so for me it is.

But WHATever. There's a lotta nice bike crap out there, once you get over three grand none of it sucks, and you should all STFU and ride your friggin bikes you insufferable Fred idiots.

Oh yeah, Di2 is idiot proof, rarely malfunctions or drops a chain, is highly reliable, etc. It really is great stuff, Shimano got it right. Dura Ace, I have no experience with Ultegra Di, other than I have seen it and it looks considerably cheesier than the sleeker Dura Ace version.

Pretty much spot on. Moved from SRAM red (with new FD) to Ultegra Di2 and quite happy with it. Was well worth the extra weight

Something sounds off about this. The only time I ever needed to fine tune my Record 10 was new chain replacements, if even then. I rode 200-300+ miles per week, to eliminate any assumptions that it was a garage queen.

If you have the money and the desire, go for it. I personally have no interest in electronic shifting, but that's just me.

Wait another 10 more years for them to work out all the bugs, and the price will come down by then.

There are no Di2 bugs I've experienced after a year of riding it on two bikes. The price of Di2 won't come down much. Pricey bike crap will always be pricey.

Also, 41 Stupid won't ever change.

I agree that I'll never go back. 3 years, 15,000 miles, zero mis-shifts, zero adjustments.
