Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Big Gnarley Veins

Im 23 years old and have been cycling almost all my life, seriously as of 3 years ago. I have noticed a huge varicose vein on right (drive side) leg, above my calf almost at the joint. Slowly getting more noticeable. Huge after I ride hard and kind of scary looking. Anyways before I webmd myself scared, Im wondering if this is a bad sign or am i just gona have these beasts for the rest of my life.

25+ years of competitive cycling with incredible capilarisation of his muscles and ensuing hyper development of the veins and arteries that support those muscles.

There is nothing 'wrong' with Mr. Hincapie.

So it is a result of riding, and providing ample amounts of blood to the necessary muscles. Thanks for the clarification

escarpment, FWIW, I would recommend going to a doctor that specializes in vein care, some vascular surgeons also specialize in it. A standing venous Doppler exam - pain free - shows the status of the veins. "big gnarly veins" at age 23 would raise flags for venous reflux disease to me. Andy

Varicose veins are genetic and have nothing to do with riding.
