Buying 2012 when 2013 bikes are here/weeks away

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buying 2012 when 2013 bikes are here/weeks away

I've been riding a somewhat broken bike for a month now and now another part goes, I was trying to hold off to get a 2013 Specialized Tarmac Apex or Roubaix Apex.

I've seen the slow leaks from specialized on bikeradar and bikerumors but no specifics on either of the lower end models, how bad is it to buy a 2012 right now and should there be a discount? Fellow rider 2 months ago got the Roubaix Apex for $2000 OTD with no fit

Why not go to your LBS(or the one your fellow rider went to) and see if they can cut you a deal on a 2012 model? The 2013 models will be available in early August and I believe there is still stock of the 2012 Tarmac Apex. Specialized hasn't made any amazing changes for 2013.

I got 20% off a 2012 Roubaix SL3 Expert a month ago plus I got the 'tour' package from specialized that included an S-works helmet.

So yes, you should expect a deal

Trek has already got 2013 models in the shops. If you go for Trek you can get discount for 2012 models.

Love the Yzerman reference in your name... GO WINGS!!!

You have a Raleigh emblem as your avatar, why not take a look at the new Raleigh's? They are pretty sweet...

I got 20% off my Felt last week. At this point, yes, you should be getting a discount on any non-2013 bike.

Yeah, I've been eyeing a Z6 that is suddenly kinda in my price range at a little below $1,500, but I can't decide if the carbon is worth it or if I should get the 2013 Z85 at new full MSRP at $1,299. My LBS tells me that the 2013's arrive this week and should be assembled around the 27th.

I don't need a carbon bike, but that is such a good price!

Yes you should be able to get a discount on the 2012...

That's how I did whenever I bought a new bike, always bought last year's model at a reduced cost...

The changes, even if major, aren't going to make me a rockstar

I advise getting the carbon. You can build it up.

Be careful, carbon asplodes! On a serious note, I'd wait until Fall as, in my experience, this is when the best deals appear. Good suggestions otherwise on asking your lbs what can they do for you discount-wise if you need to buy now.

I didn't catch the Canada part. I was all excited about my free stuff (just bought a shiv) until I saw that all the participating dealers are in Canada. That's a pretty good promo. Some of it is low-value, but an s-works helmet is a nice perk.

ahh....sorry bro. I didn't know it was Canada only...score one for us I guess.

The s-works helmet was great and the duffle bag is actually awesome, good set of S-works turbo tires too. Plus the 4 extra tubes and CO2 carts are a nice perk. But the bottle cages were crap and the colour selection for helmets are a little lacking. but really can't complain.

That's the key part for me. I currently ride my single speed 4 miles to the bus, ride the bus 15 miles with the bike on the front, get off the bus and pedal another .5 miles to work. Then I do the reverse in the afternoon. My bike does exactly what I need to to do. However, my next (an addition, not a replacement) bike will be a nice-to-have for those days that I want to do the full 20 miles each way or go on group rides that are not so easy with a single-speed.

The biggest issue is the availability of 2012's. If I were eyeing a Specialized, I could wait and work a deal. The major Specialized LBS in my area still has 2011's that they are trying to clear-out. Heck, they barely stocked 2012's. However, the only local Felt dealer is a small shop and they have just a few odds and ends remaining. One being a 54cm Z6. I'll probably just let it pass and get the 2013 Z85 (Aluminum) when I am ready to spend that much cash.
