Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Coop

Just fixed an annoying problem on my Univega Arrowpace thanks to a local Bike Coop here in LA. There was a serious wobble in my chainrings so we started stripping parts off to find the problem. We were pretty sure the spider was bent, but were checking all the possible culprits just in case....

No play in the crank arms....
Chainrings...flush
Spider...turns out to be absolutely fine.

Took a chance on replacing the bottom bracket and problem solved! Fifteen bucks for a modernized shimano cartridge upgrade of the old BB and the bike feels totally smooooth. Finally was able to dial in the front derailluer now that the chainrings move in the same plane. Also replaced my brake cables, housing, and threw a new tube in my rear wheel. Can't wait for my weekend ride!

Thank God for bicycle co-ops!

We need so many more throughout the entire western hemisphere. I only wish that they would proliferate and expand far beyond the horizon...

I'm so glad you were able to both locate and resolve your BB problem. That's what I absolutely love about co-ops. They render an invaluable service to the cycling community. Hopefully, they'll become the ultimate source of most cyclist's greater cycling independence.
