Keo blade replacement

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Keo blade replacement

Anyone had the experience of breaking the blade on a keo blade pedal? I broke mine today, somewhat disappointing less than two years old. Ribble cycles advertises them for sale on their web site, but when I call the LBS to see if they have them in, they tell me that look won't sell the replacement blades, they require the whole pedal to be sent back to look for a replacement. Seemed pretty easy to get the blade out, seems like a new one could just be flexed and put right back in.

Replacing the blade is supposed to require some sort of pedal jig to hold it in a certain position to allow you to push the blade in, apparently not as easy as you think it is to put it in. You can always buy the replacement blades online. I have a feeling Look would replace them for free...

I broke 3 blades in 2 years. Sent back to Look and replaced under warranty all 3 times. Look wanted both pedals back to inspect them (or so I was told). Took about a month before I got them back, but that's the benefit of buying from my LBS: they gave me loaner Keo blade Ti pedals to use while mine were gone. I've now gone back to Keo 2 Max Carbon on all my bikes. It's a hassle to break those blades and can ruin a ride or race. My newly repaired blades are sitting in my workbench to use as spares, but I don't think I'll ever need them because the other keos never break.

you do need a tool for it which Look dealers only carry (apparently).

I had the 16nm version before. I'm under the assumption theyre not for everyday use. Mine cracked after 1.5 months and I remember the last time I used it was on a group ride with lots of stop/go.

That's pretty bad.

I don't think I'd ever go back with them because of durability issues. Otherwise theyre an excellent choice for racing (I assume).

Sounds to me like blades are a big PITA. Maybe you should have gone with the regular keos.

I actually just had one replaced at my LBS. I don't think the mechanics had ever done it before so it took them like 20-30 minutes and cost me something like $30 for one new blade and the maintenance.

But they are lighter. And pros use them. That's what matters.
