Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Skratch Labs drink mix

Some time ago i heard an interview of dr. Allen Lim on Bicycle radio. After hearing about his story and company (Skratch Labs) i got very interested.

Ive made/tried a couple of the rice cakes recipes, and feel they helped keep me powered thru rides without overeating.

A couple of days ago i ordered 1 pound of the lemon hidration drink. Plus a single stick of rhe other flavors. (my wife just called "you have a package from skratch labs"

Searched the forum for more discussion, but there's very little on skratchlabs.

I love it. Pretty pricey but good. Not so sweet and the flavor doesn't make me want to puke, like Heed.

I love the lemon lime flavor. Like the other posters say, it's not too sweet and I don't need to drink water after it. I just recently bought the 1lb from my LBS

I was very curious to try this. My only concern is that the first ingredient is table sugar. How would you compare it to HEED?

I've used now for about 3 weeks and I like the skratch mix much better now than HEED. I used to use HEED for 2 years but the skratch goes down a lot easier and very little aftertaste in my mouth. Also tastes good when the drink is warm while riding in 100 degree weather.
I drink a lot more and keep hydrated and energized much better with the skratch mix than I ever had with the HEED mix.

So far I'm a convert and I'm on 1lb bag #3.

I have been using for a month now. The raspberry has seeds in it and me being a chef that that was pretty neat knowing they used raspberries to make it.

As a die hard Heed guy I am very intrigued now. Sounds like I will order when my current stash runs out.

Skratch has been a good companion to water on the bike. I say companion because I can still get stomach pains with too much combined with gels or blocks. I'll usually carry water in a larger container compared to the flavored stuff and drink it in a 2:1 ratio. Otherwise, it's still a lot of sugar at once. That being said, definitely easier to go down especially when warm compared to HEED.

Also one note for how i drink skratch: i drink out of 24 oz bottles, using one serving size of skratch mix. I think for 24 oz's you're suposed to use more, but i like it just the way it is!

I tried the raspberry. It was OK. Pretty expensive. I liked the taste, but it seemed a little bit gritty or something. On a 90+ degree day, gritty teeth aren't really refreshing. I've been using Gu Electrolyte Brew (Blueberry Pomegranate and Raspberry) and I like them a lot. They work for me, so I don't see much reason to experiment.

Just tried Skratch (lemon-lime) for the first time on today's ride. Mixed one scoop with 21oz of water. Loved it.

Been using it now for 3 weeks, love it. Had some shipping issues getting it from their website, but after talking to them (via email) thier customer service is second-to-none. Awesome company, excellent product.

Just ordered up some orange & pineapple. Curious to see how it works with Clif Bloks.

All I can say is that you guys better NEED that stuff to be drinking it for sports nutrition.

At $15 per pound, if you're really training long enough to actually need caloric replacement (2-3+ hr rides), you could go with maltodextrin for $1/pound for 15x the savings and a pretty similar nutritional profile. The taste won't be quite the same though, although I actually really like the mellow sweetness of maltodextrin.

I currently ride about 130 miles per week, and I consume 2-3 pounds of maltodextrin per month on the bike. That's like $45 per month at 3 lbs of Skratch. Dang.

I've been using Skratch for the past few months and like it a lot. I don't feel there's a "power boost" like some of the Hammer products, but it goes down light and easy and I don't get any stomach pains during or after rides. Definitely think it helps with hydration as I don't seem to get as thirsty either.

@MS: I quoted you b/c Clif Bloks are my fave snack of choice on rides, and they go together just fine. For extended rides though, something a little more lasting with more substance, like a Clif bar or Power Bar helps me.

interested in how Skratch compared to Hammer Nutrition's HEED as far as ingredients, price, etc.

What is the electrolyte content in maltodextrin? I believe electrolyte replacement is the whole purpose of the Skratch Labs product.

fwiw, I use malto as well, often mix it with Skratch Labs for the taste. I also only use Skratch Labs for rides of 2 hours or more, which means weekend rides for me. Conversely, because malto is so cheap I'll often use it during the week for hard, short rides. So my consumption of malto is elevated because it's cheap. If it cost as much as other products I'd simply use water at $0 cost.

Electrolyte content of maltodextrin should be about zero - its sugar, just a bit different molecular structure than sucrose.

I know. I don't understand why malto is always popping up in threads about electrolyte replacement products.
