Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Transferring to Road Biking

Alright guys,

Over the last year I’ve started to take more to the roads now with my MTB and I’ve been training at roughly 10miles per day at 45 mins now I’m hoping to tackle to LeJOG in 2013 (possibly September). Now I’m looking at a road bike like this one:

https://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/127434.html

Now I’m not looking for something special, just something light and fast and capable of doing the speeds I want to reach 50mph + and also capable of simply going the miles I want.

Although I’m pretty sure on what I’m looking for I’m just slightly concerned about the weight, in-respect to what weight I should be looking for. The one in the URL is around 10KG and I’m about 70KG.

Obviously I’m not looking to spend much more that £750 to the one in the link is ideal, but just need other peoples opinions, especially when taking on long distances.

Looks good, but top speed may only be 48 mph.

Hi,

What’s the calculation for the top speed you did there?

Thanks

Just a guess...a 53-42-30 would be better.

Yeah a 50-12 with a 700x23c wheel set and 170mm cranks will get you 49.9 mph @ a cadence of 153rpm's.

I'll keep that in mind, you’re referring to the sprockets on the rear cassette there?

Chain Rings (front) 53-42-30. Cassette in Rear has Cogs 11-23 would be good.
The numbers are the teeth count on each gear.

If you can really drope the hamer and dial it up to 400 watts, I think you could hit 50mph on that badboy. How big are your guads?

50 mph is easy with 2 magnets on your wheel.

How big of a hill do you plan on going down when you hit 50 mph or are you talking about hitting 50 mph on flat ground?

Well yeah, if you don't have the guads for it.

Before you start talking about riding 50 MPH, unless your talking about a mountain descent, in which case gearing doesn't make much difference, why not try something a little more reasonable, such as running a 3 minute mile.

Transferring to Road Biking

I was out on a group ride this weekend and i was maxing out in my top gear, 52/14. Some of the guys must of had 13's. Didn't seem fair. Think i'll have to find a freewheel with a 13 or maybe go to a 54 chainring.

A man's reach should exceed his grasp, else what's a heaven for?
