requirements to buy a certain bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

requirements to buy a certain bike

you can't buy a good bike if you can't ride it fast, the quality if your bike should be proporcional to your FTP

200w FTP = 750$ bike
250w FTP = 1250$ bike
300w FTP = 2000$ bike
350w FTP = 3500$ bike
400w FTP = 5000$ bike
400w+ FTP = any bike

if you do this you will never be humiliated by someone riding a hybrid bike.

Meh, I reckon if you've got the money to buy a $10,000 bike you might as well enjoy it if that's your bag. Just as there's a certain smugness associated with overtaking a guy on a $10,000 bike while riding a cheap touring bike with loaded panniers, so there's probably a reverse smugness if he knows he's a billionaire and I'm not.

I've got a ftp of 302 watts and I ride a $3,500 bike, a $6,500 bike, and a $11,000 bike. In other words, I ride what I want to ride.

My FTP is 351 watts according to my butt Dyno. You should send them to me for verification.

a) shouldn't the chart be in watts/kg?

b) how do you measure your power if you don't buy a powermeter until your FTP is higher than 350w?

I have a buddy who intends to buy a Pinarello Dogma for one simple reason: when people look at it they'll know it's a $12K bike.

Totally valid. He's got the money, and let's face it; why do people buy BMWs when a Civic will get them there just as comfortably, and just as fast, particularly when we're all mired in traffic together?

At the risk of a serious response to a silly thread, the scale is a bit harsh.

I'm virtually certain that the number of people posting on BF that have an honest to god 400w FTP could be counted on fewer than one hand.

Means we're all relegated to riding bikes $2000 and under.

It also means that no one should spend more than $2000 for a bike, because if you qualify for a better one, it will be provided for you.

Also means I overspent by about $11,000.

Just for a point of reference, T Mobile's riders should all have been stripped of their TT bikes. With an average of 392 watts on TT bikes costing way more than $2000, they clearly breached the rules.

https://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=3748

Perhaps this is the reason T Mobile ended up folding

also w/kg would make more sense than just a random list of watt requirements.

I hope your FTP isn't proportional to your spelling skills. That could really be humiliating.
