Not judging, just not sure what to think
So i've seen this guy riding around on a fuji TT bike around my area for the last few weeks and today, i caught him at the store and decided to talk to him. I've been training for triathlon so i thought "it'd be awesome to have someone local to hang out with and train." I checked out his bike (shimano ultegra all around, full carbon) and asked him if he did triathlons. he looked at me puzzled and then i told him it was because of his bike. He said "oh! no i don't really ride for fitness. I just liked the look of it and i use it around town mainly."
Now, i don't know the full story and if that's the truth and i will not judge his fiscal choices but....come on. I'm almost at the point of trading him my beach cruiser for that fuji. I feel it's a slight waste of resources?
What does everyone else think?

Why is it a waste of resources? The guy can afford a nice bike, why is that a problem? I use my Porsche to pick up groceries and drive the dog around. Is that a waste of resources also? Some people (myself included) would rather not have something unless it is the best money can buy.

Yeah i can see that and agree with you. That's why i put the question mark on it at the end. Because I know if i had tons of money, i would probably buy a nice cruising around bike. My only head scratcher is why a tri bike? those are tough to get adjust to

Ok, I'm bored, so I'll jump in. He's jerking your chain. Since you see him riding around, check out his legs (be discreet ) and watch how he rides. If he's really not training for anything, figure out how to get him to spend his money sponsoring you.

I think thats like buying a porche to pull your party barge. It may work and it is definitely top quality but it don't make it the right tool for the job. An Escalade or Ford King Ranch would be just as top of the line but perform the intended use much better.
But hey if you have the money and its what you want go for it.

That's one of the most remarkable things about capitalism. No matter how much money you have, there will be someone comes up with a model that is right in your price bracket, and you just hafta have it to prove that you are that person. Unfortunately it's ruining the environment so it'll hafta stop one day but until then I justs sits back and laughs.
Classic is that in Australia you can pay extra money for personalized license plates for your car! They even have some that make out like you are a foreign diplomat or something.

I though that was unique to the U.S. lol. Here you can get plates that have your favorite sports team, the university you went to, or many other things that offer special plates. On top of that you can pay extra to spell out something on your plates too.

I once saw this short fat guy with this really beautiful, tall, and super hot, blonde babe at Denny's...
What really messed me up was when it was time for them to exit, she whipped out the cash, paid for their meals, and returned back to their table to leave a tip. I just sat there spellbound...
Kept me awake for about 2 nights in a row. I just couldn't figure it out!
PS.
Two theories:
1) The fat guy's blackmailing her...
2) Your guy's bike is stolen...

So what? Let him ride the bike he enjoys riding. It just doesn't matter. Remember the phrase "ride what you like"? That guy is doing it.

That's one way to look at it. A very cynical and sarcastic way though. I think its odd just because a time trial bike would be an awkward choice to cruise around town on for errands. Something with panniers and fenders would be easier to work with, but to each his own. Still gotta give the guy props for using a bike at all though.

He is probably a member of the 41 and gave you an answer that he knew would bother you enough to post about.

Hey, remember that this is America, where people commute to office work in cars/trucks meant to do major construction, survive deserts, swamps, and jungles, and perform military maneuvers in war zones.

Same thing could be said for anyone that is riding a bike that someone else feels is more bike then they need...eg. dudes doing social ride on full carbon rigs with carbon wheels, bars posts (in other words, the typical BF poster )

009Jim - let me get this straight, capitalism allows people to find a bike (or product) in their price category that meets their needs...and this is ruining the environment and must stop? Am I reading this correctly? You guys play rugby in aussie-land, right? I'm guessing you sustsined one or two too many bumps to the head. As long as the guy is riding his fancy CF TT bike instead of the Escalade he has parked in the garage, how is that hurting the environment?
The next time I am in the market for a bike or a car, I'll make sure to check with you guys first, to make sure I'm good enough to deserve the model I choose.

Shimano Certified
I would think if someone wanted to get where they are going expeditiously a TT bike would be most effective
