Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How accurate is the Garmin 500 Edge temp gauge?

On the return leg of my 72 Sunday miler, the temp. gauge on my Garmin Edge hit 108F.

It was hot, but it did not feel quite THAT hot.

How accurate is that gauge?

Thanks.

Mine seems to read really high (5-10+ F), not sure what the deal is.

My regular crew all ride with Garmin 500s. for what it's worth, I've noticed that we're all always within a few degrees of each other.

The Garmin is accurate for the temp of the unit. The weather gives you the shade temp not the sun beating off the road. If you want to compare put the bike in full shade not moving. The angle of the Garmin also makes a difference depending on your direction.

My Garmin 500 temp gauge is fantastically accurate when used indoors. Once I use it outdoors in the sun, it is useless.

it's useless. even if it's a cloudy day where you aren't having so much trouble with the unit warming up by the sun's radiation it'll take so long to go from room temperature down to ambient temperature that any accurate measurement is nigh on impossible.

I wouldn't say mine is useless. It consistently reads about 5° high.

It's laughably inaccurate from the dead of winter to the depths of summer.

All you need to know 50-80 OK. 80-100 hot 100+ too hot go home. 40-50 dress warm below 40 go home.

108 is possible. There is a lot of heat that reflects off pavement. Not uncommon to pick up an extra 5 to 10 degrees that way.

I've found it's off by the same 5-10 degrees on overcast winter days on snow-covered gravel roads.

It doesn't seem too accurate... but I don't pay attention to it anyways.
I don't need a gadget to tell me that it's hot/cold.

This may be it. That particularstretch of road is about 12 miles of agradual but steady climb. There are no trees, no shade, just the tarmac and me riding my bike. Part of the 108F reading could've been reflected heat from the road.

And now that I think about, the two water bottles on my bike were actually very warm by the time that I finally got home!

Yet it did not feel THAT hot... Maybe my mind was playing tricks on me. YIKES!

It was 110-113 degrees on Sunday's ride, and the Garmin was showing the temp to be 115-119 in the sun, 3 feet above the pavement.

It's pretty accurate(IMO).

The local high temperature on January 15 was 35F, Garmin read as high as 41. On February 18, it was 36, Garmin said 48. On January 28, the high was 28, Garmin said 36.

I was wondering this myself. I left my bike out in direct sunlight for about 20 minutes and it seemed to read 5-8 degrees than what weather.com was reporting for my area. Could it be that the radiating sun is affecting the reading?
