Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Should I buy this used Orbea Volata?

The specs that he listed on the ad are as follows:

Specs from Orbea:
Campagnolo Mirage 10-speed drivetrain
FSA Gossamer crankset
Mavic Aksium wheels
ITM handlebar and stem
Carbon fork and seatstay
Look Keo pedals
Vision aerobars

He said that he bought the bike new for around 1200-1300 a few years ago and just never got into riding. So the bike has very few miles on it and he would be willing to sell it for around half what he originally bought it for.
I just could not find a whole lot of info about Orbeas and no shop around me sells them so I couldn't try riding one. Is something like this worth the money?
Thank you for the help.

Not an expert but Orbea is a Spanish bike maker. Without photos it's difficult to tell what kind of shape it's really in. If it's in the condition the seller says it's in and if it fits you I would say it would be worth 5 hundred dollars - less if you can get it.

If it's in nice condition I might even pay the 6 bills he seems to be asking. But I would offer 5 first. Orbea is a fine frame and Campy Mirage is WAY better than a low end group oughta be.

as far as i can tell from the one picture the bike is in great condition. I am going to do my best to get a look at it tomorrow but since I am just getting into cycling i am not positive on what to look for.

so that is the one picture. if i do go see it tomorrow anything I should be looking for other than the overall condition of the frame? I just don't want to make a bad buy on a used bike when I it would be possible to buy a new one it would just make more sense to save money if i can.

Shift thru all the gears, spin the wheels and look for wobbles, take it for a quick ride. That pic looks clean, but it might be from the day he bought it. At some point, if you don't have a buddy who knows bikes willing to go with you you gotta roll the dice. If it looks as clean as it does in the pic, and it fits, I would be a buyer at 6. But I would still offer 5...

Hope you're not too tall. I ride a 52 and I'm 5' 8". Make sure it fits you close enough to be able to adjust to your height

I am 5'8"- 5'9" so it should be around the right height. I have rode a few other bikes sized for me though so if it feels small I will have to pass on it.

Alright I will be sure to do all that and I will offer 500 or maybe 550 just to see how it goes. He is also selling some gear if it is high quality gear I will offer 600 for everything instead of 6 for just the bike

Sounds good. IDK how Orbea are sized, but you are probably on the line between 51/52 am 53/54. One size smaller is better usually than one size too big.

I was riding a couple weekends ago with a guy who was new to riding. We were training for the MS150 with our team. He was a pretty big guy, and pretty bad at hills, but he had a nice bike. Can't remember what it was, but it might have been Obrea.

Anyhow, when we stopped, I looked a little closer at his bike, and he had a tiny cassette on that thing, probably a 25. A new rider who carries some weight with a little cassette will make for a tough climb. Not hard or expensive to switch those out, but maybe a little moreso with Campy? IDK.

Idle speculation even by BF standards. Also painfully inaccurate.

Go over the frame carefully. A rider in NY died some years back when his Orbea frame broke apart at the top tube.
