Broken headtube... (not mine)
I was at the local performance bike shop, stocking up on some tubes when I saw this in the mechanics area:
How does this even happen? I think it's an Al frame.

Throw the stick!!!!
My guess is a garage door and a roof rack were involved.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe a ton of curb hopping weakened the welds and then a large blow, like hitting a wall at low speed or a bump at high speed caused it just to give. Unfortunately, I can't post this picture a lot because it bears a striking resemblance to my Fuji.

Shimano Certified
Actually that is likely a frame crack that was warrantied but not yet stripped. To prevent dumpster divers from taking warranty units and restoring them(becoming liable) the companies mandate cut/destroy now... I got one before that policy wave happened.

That's interesting. So Performance cuts it before they send it back?

I doubt they would chop it before stripping the parts from it. That would make headset removal more difficult than it has to be.

And this is why I don't ride aluminum frames... they will explode if I look at it wrong (end sarcasm)

The rest of the frame/components look to be in good shape. I think the roof rack + garage is a good guess. The bike was probably almost new... or maybe the guy had just taken it home?
It still has the seatpost and wheel reflectors mounted.

i saw a bike today...right side only bartape tear and shifter scuff/scratches, with a broken (snapped) derailleur hanger, and apparently the rear derailleur was also actually bent...it happened when he was justing riding to work.
