Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Odd French Bike -Good buy?

https://collegestation.craigslist.org...227260577.html

I am wondering if this is a decent buy for an on college campus bike that will be used for about 2 years.

Since it is so ambiguous of a buy, could anyone maybe let me know if it has potential as a purchase or if it looks bad. I'm a newer buyer! thanks!

It looks like any number of French (inexpensive/starter) steel race bikes from the late 70's. I wouldn't buy it for 150.00 I wouldn't buy it at all unless it was going to be a beater bike to ride around campus, or chain up in town for errands and such. The Brooks saddle can be hard on the butt, the thing probably weighs in excess of 30 pounds so it will be a bit of a dog riding it up small hills, or other.

That said - I noticed the France label looks like something someone made on a printer + kinda suspicious as the rear derailleur is not easily seen in the photos, nor the name plate on the head, or down tube.

The only thing worth anything, and not much at that, would be the saddle and even that is suspicious. I have ridden brooks for over 40 years and recall no model where the brooks label is not attached directly to he rim of the saddle, not the tag hanging down style illustrated. I would not waste an amount in excess of 40 as already mentioned.

Another thumbs down. A quality vintage bike with cottered cranks would be 1960s and earlier. After that cottered cranks were put on entry level bikes. This is a 1970s entry level bike. In collector circles it's called a "boom" bike as it came to the US during a major "Bike Boom" in the 70s. It is way over-priced.

That saddle is odd. I've never heard of counterfeit Brooks but that looks like a saddle with a shell and a cover, not the one piece of leather that Brooks typically are. Did they ever make other styles of saddles?

There were some cheap vinyl-over-foam-over-metal Brooks saddles made for low-end boom era bikes. They are sad, and not worthy of the name! The OP should walk away from this bike, unless he can get it for a "garage sale" price.

And that particular Brooks saddle is nothing special. It's vinyl, not leather, and consistent with the other low-end components on that low-end frame.

This isn't to say that it couldn't be a perfectly serviceable bike on campus, but the asking price is far too high. I'd say $100 tops.

On the plus side, you wouldn't have to worry about anyone stealing it.

As two posters have already pointed out, there is something VERY suspicious about that "Made in France" sticker. How was that supposed to stand the test of time and stay in that shape over all these years?
Too many questionables about that bike and well over priced. Stay away.
