Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Under $7000 Road Bike Thread

Saw another thread about affordable road bikes, but it appeared to be missing a zero. Can you get a decent road bike these days for $7k?

Have to spend at least $10k for the bike to be considered even halfway decent...

You can get a decent bike for $7k, but you'll need to replace the stock wheels and seat before you ride.

You can get a decent bike for $2k. Spend another $1500-$2k and upgrade the wheels, seatpost, crankset, brakes, stem and bars.

If you don't have at least $10k to spend on a bike i wouldn't even bother. Just get something at Target or Wal Mart.

If you're willing to manage a few compromises, you can get a modest budget build for just under $7K, but certainly not the kind of bike you'd sport at finishing school.

>300% of whatever you think "nice" is.

Oh... I could get a ____ bike decently equipped for $2700-$3500... x 300% = "acceptable"

Just barely, if you're into custom titanium and Di2.

*warning* second hi-jack, I know a guy that pronounces sram --'scram'-- am I allowed to beat him with my $4000 beater bike for this?

I'd say beating him with a $3k bike would be sufficient but if you like overkill...

Bikes under $7000 are great for commuting ... you don't have to bother with a lock while leaving 'em parked around town and you don't have to worry about people scratching them when they park their bikes against them or things like that.

I currently ride a budget build Six-13 with Campy Centaur & 50mm carbon tubulars. It cost about $1200 to build up. If I go for a $7000+ bike, about how much increase in average speed can I expect ?

Not enough, you need to hit at least $16k before the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

$16k and a slammed/flipped stem and an absurbdly high seat post gives you 50000000 kilowatts as well.

Would $7000 be good enough for me to race cat 5 ?

$7,000 for a bike? Seriously?

That's barely enough to cover the cost of a frameset, let alone a drivetrain, wheels, saddle, bars...

Average speed is directly proportional to money spent, according to undisclosed experts.
So if you come from a $1200 bike your speed should at least quintuply!
