Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Blister

I tend to get blister on longer rides on both of my pinky toes. It started around 70km and after that, which send a sharp pain in every pedal stroke. Still have some legs but the blister really deters me from going on, with century ride in a week or so, is there a way to prevent that happen ?

In the long term, you should try out some new pairs of shoes that might fit better. In the short term, to get ready for your century, I would wrap both toes in athletic tape before the ride.

Try injinji socks. They're a tad weird to get used to putting on but they're great for eliminating blisters.

Have you tried loosening or tightening the toe portion of the straps/BOA laces on your shoes? I had similar issues on long rides until I tried cinching down the upper and middle closures and then relaxing the lower ones a bit. If you are getting blisters, your shoe's last may not be a good match for your foot shape. The athletic tape suggestion is a good short term solution, but better fitting shoes is probably the right long term solution.

Supporting the above posts: Moleskin and good coverage of duct tape. The Moleskin will give some relief and the duct tape will slide inside the shoe instead of your skin, preventing more blistering. If you haven't already taped up, be aware of a hotspot (red and sensitive). Once you get that, stop and tape up. If you shoes are laced, loosen and maybe re-lace leaving the bottom 2 eyelets unlaced so the toe box has lots more room.

These techniques are very well known by hikers and worked well for me on long hikes. Sometimes it's not the shoes, but in your case, I think everyone is correct - get different shoes. Leave room for your feet to swell. Try wool socks. Oh, and I had poor luck with multi-layer socks. (like 2 socks stitched together)

There is something called "blister prevention tape" you could try out. I used it with great success though it was for a totally different sport. So I am not sure how well it will work here. You could also try other types of socks though I doubt it will work.

Generally however, when shoes give you blisters, even after they are broken in, I think the fit is probably wrong. You may have to think about getting some other shoes in the long run. Not being able to go on because your shoes are too painful is like the opposite of what a good shoe should do. Discomfort in your feet should not be something that slows you down. For me, it is not even something I think about. Was on the bike for 5 hours this saturday and it had not even crossed my mind.

Socks look good. Where are the blisters? Side, bottom? Re-reading the thread, I'm pretty sure the other replies for new shoes are correct. Leave room in the toe box. Assuming you have straight toes w/o issues any other time.

If the feet is snug in the shoe and knowing defeet probably the issue is the sock or both the shoe and the sock.

I would try with some other socks like rh+, campagnolo, castelli or other stuff but no defeet. Sometimes is better spend more money in clothing because you never now. Stopped using defeet like zillion of years ago because after 2 hours i was getting hot spots using them, you get blisters for sure in the sock seam. You get what you pay for, try RH+... good stuff, awesome support and are not expensive.

Are you saying that defeet socks are not wool? If that's the case, switch to wool socks.
