Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Opinion: Laced or Velcro Shoes?

Hey guys, just trying to get opinions here. If you had the choice between bringing back the old laced shoes but in a new style or staying with the velcro that is used now, which would you pick and why? There are benifits for both!

Thanks

Let me know how adjusting the fit of your shoes goes while riding. I think I loosen and tighten my shoes multiple times per ride if the ride is suitably long.

Velcro & buckle, or something like that specialized arrangement... either work great. Laces would suck.

Laced shoes while riding?

YHGTBFK.

Why not bring back the Penny Farthing bikes while we're at it.

The only laced road shoe I've seen are those Dromartis, which look classy as hell, but don't strike me as performance oriented.

Was thinking you meant BOA laces vs. Velcro.

Do they even make lace shoes anymore? Buckle/Velcro is the way to go.

I don't do velcro, so I'd rank them:

1. Boa
2. Laces
3. Buckles (any makers still use buckles?)
4. Velcro fly.

What possible advantages could a lace up bike shoe have?

One thing I can think of is that you can get them really tight.

I had a conversation with a custom shoe maker about the differences. For me the Boa is probably better but for someone that wants their shoes really tight, a buckle will let you get your shoes tighter.

If you ever suffer dual brake failure, you can untie one of them and stick the lace in your rear wheel.

Opening and closing Velcro over and over and over will wear it out. Guaranteed. It's micro-adjustable, but it shouldn't have to be redone very often, so it's fine for closures that don't need constant adjustment.

Buckles can get something very tight, and they won't wear out like Velcro does. Pop open, ratchet shut, and that's all.

BOA closures can do the same thing but at a lighter weight.

I like my shoes with Velcro forefoot straps and a buckle for the top, ankle strap. Once I set the forefoot straps, I don't have to touch them again for months, if ever. The single buckle is easy to use, durable, and lets me make a quick adjustment without having to stop or even unclip.

Laces? Meh. Only for very casual-styled shoes, and most of those are too flexible to be comfortable for me on rides longer than half an hour.

i got a free pair of lace up mtn bike shoes that work well for spin...or mtn biking....i have no shame though and dont care what people say about my feet

for a road bike though im fairly sure i would go with velcro/buckle or that boa thingy..although velcro falls in my immediate price range

I voted for laces, but I suspect that has to do with the fact that I don't wear special bicycling shoes when I ride ... just plain, ordinary tennis shoes. LOL ... I do have a pair of FILA shoes that have become my favorite pair of shoes when I ride, but then, they are relatively plain tennis shoes.

So, basically, none.

Taylor Phinney likes his laces. I've never tried them, but I can't really complain about my buckle/Velcro shoe combination I use now.
