Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Because regardless of the turnout, you get a brand new bike with no hassles. Court cases don't always go the way they should. Just recently, one of my customers was hit by a car. The car was cited for improper left turn, and as it was nearing twilight when the accident happened, by the time police arrived, it was dusk, and the cyclist was cited for riding without lights. As a result, the offending motorists insurance denied the cyclist's claim for his damages which included his destroyed Madone. Had he "lawyered up" maybe he could have persuaded the offending company to pay the claim, but equally, had he elected to obtain a replacement rider, he wouldn't have had to choose between paying a lawyer thousands, or just spending the money on the bike.

Some duct tape to put that bumper back on, and some red tape for the taillight, and he's ready to go!

Dammit, you beat me to it. Kept reading the whole thread thinking I was going to be able to sneak it in, and then you beat me to the punch.

Don't forget to include any towing charges, taxi fares, vehicle rental fees, etc. directly associated with the accident.

I don't know, comparing the number of times I've been rear ended (0) to the number of times I've done something completely absentmindedly (many/day) I think a rear rack is a lot smarter for me than a roof rack. Just sayin'.

Well, I've settled on the car. I think I got a pretty good deal considering the mileage. Now I am just waiting on the bike. An appraiser came by today to take pictures and I submitted receipts for everything I could find that I added to the bike recently and for the century that I missed. I included receipts for the pedals, seat, tires, cadence sensor, and rear wheel. My local shop wrote an estimate for a replacement bike and a statement describing the bike beyond repair - considering it was hit by a pickup and flew off the bike rack onto the freeway at 55 mph. My local shop sells Cannondale - so I might be joining the CAAD10 crowd in the future. This whole thing sucks - but I am glad that I got my cross bike built up last month so I still have something to ride. Also I am glad my family was not in the car...I get nervous now whenever I see someone following close behind me in the car. Things could have been a lot worse than they turned out.

otherwise, not much help here, but the other guys have it covered. the cost of the super high mileage car will likely cost more. unless you're PCAD

Pedant alert. Redundant. Unless there's such a thing as an honest scammer.

Quick update on the bike - settled with the insurance company and got a fair deal. They refunded my race fees and bike rack as well. It should pretty much cover the cost of a new bike - I'm a happy camper. Now...the question is do I get a similar bike or get something nicer? My local shop sells Cannondale and I am looking at a CAAD10.

Great news.

Ride the CAAD, see if it suits you. You might be able to score a deal on a 2012, although the end-of-model-year sales period in my area was really last month.

You could also consider investing in a better wheelset instead of a more expensive frame.

Got my check from the ins - and went out and bought a bike today. Found a 2012 caad10 5 in my size for $1250. Here is a pic from the web...real pics coming tomorrow once the reflectors come off.

Good to hear that you didn't get the run around from the insurance carrier. sounds like a good choice on the new bike, but I am a bit biased there. Pics of the new bike when you can, please.

This thread is my worst nightmare. Anytime I have either of my bikes on the back of my car, I constantly worry about someone rear-ending me. A couple weeks ago, I had both of my bikes(whom I love equally) on the rack and I think I might have spent more time looking backward than forward.

Glad it worked out for you, the CAAD10 is a nice bike. If I hadn't gotten a gig at my local Specialized shop, I would have gotten a CAAD.

Here's the new bike - 19.1 pounds according to my scale. Took it out for a 30 mile spin today and got a bunch of PRs.

Nice bike!

I love Cannondales. Thinking about selling one of my road bikes so I can get one.
