Can Anybody comment on the quality of these shifters. I know the Chorus/Record shifters have nicer bearings, but what about the Veloce Shifters.

P.S. Veloce 10 speed shifters are dirt cheap....$140 (nashbar once had them for $129). For 10 speed shifters! Veloce Casettes are only $75 (plus you can swap out individual cogs)

Veloce Derailleurs look better than Shimano for some reason.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm seriously thinking of switching to Campagnolo for both my bikes. Why have 1 shimano and 1 Campy?

The Veloce levers are fine; almost the same as Centaur except for an (insignificant) weight reduction hole in the shifter paddle. Not sure that the ball bearing issue is as significant as some would make it...
the entire Veloce line is a good value.

I've got Veloce on my training bike and sometimes I swear it shfits better than the Record on my race bike. I like it a lot. It compares favourably with Shimano 105 for performance.
Mine is the 9s version though.

I've got full Veloce 9 speed on my bike and it has not missed a beat.
Dont have anything to compare them too though.

Veloce shifters $140 ( better deals if you shop.At one point I could get them for $115 with Nasbar 10% discount )

Veloce Rear Derailleur $69
Veloce front derailleur $30 (Centaur is even available in special compact crank configuration for $40)
Veloce 10s cassette $75 (or use conversion cassette if you keep shimano wheel)
Campy Rear wheel (nice handbuilt one with OCR rim at oddsandendos for $175 shipped )

Use whatever crankset you want with above parts.

Maybe you wouldn't put Veloce on your dream bike.....but it really seems hard to beat for your everyday workhorse bike.

Ultegra 10s and Veloce 10s cassettes are the same price, but the Veloce cassette comes in Individual cogs (custom cassettes are therefore easy with the Veloce) and there is an option for a 29T with the Campy whereas Shimano only comes 27T in 10s.

I have record on my climbing bike and veloce on my rain/touring bike. Other than the veloce being a little stiffer to shift, I see no functional difference. Veloce's heavier, of course.

Will a Chorus front derailer (10 sp) work with the rest fo the veloce gruppo?

Yeah. Just like a Ultegra front derailleur will work with a tiagra group.

I might be running Veloce on my compact crank bike with the exception of a centaur compact front deraileur (centaur compact front derailleur is cheap enough $40 at reparto course)

I kinda like the Centaur gray. Been thinking about using it on my wifes new bike.

If 10years on a set of 8spd Mirage ERGOs is any indication I would say the Veloce will last long enough for you to save money for a Chorus group. All I need is a little time to put new D springs in to put them on to another bike for another 10yrs of use. Veloce is IMO between 105 and Ultegra.

I'm thinking of doing this with my poor weather/trainer. Could you explain to me how the 'conversion cassette' works.

Currently I have 105 throughout on my beater and chorus on my fair weather ride. I love the campy system and want to convert the beater on limited funds. I like this idea and would like to see if I could do it without rebuilding a wheel. Probably in a year or two I would have the wheels rebuilt with veloce hubs.

Questions:

1. What is the conversion cassette, where can you get it and in what range (12-25, etc.)?
2. Can I just use my existing 105 crankset? Is the spacing from 53 to 39 different on shim and campy?

1. American classic makes them. $70 or so for 11-23, 12-23, 12-25. Works on shimano hub.

2. I don't see why not. In fact sheldon brown does exactly this in his shiamagnolo kits. Campy also works with FSA and ISIS, so why not octalink?
