Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

75 tooth chainring

I was bar tending friday night and had a conversation turned argument about bikes with a rather intoxicated patron. He told me that his "custom" time trial bike, which was a trek just like lance armstrong, with mavic wheels(facepalm) could go 50 mph on flats. I basically told him hes lying and that is impossible unless you were a radioactive mario cipollini. He didnt get it. But he told me that his bike has a 75 tooth chainring and that when it is in his 11t cog, at 120 rpm "not him but someone" could get that fast. he did the math. I then told him that he didnt have a 75 tooth chainring and that unless his was custom made which it was not, that this is utter bull poop. He didnt tip me very well.

Is there even such a thing as 75t chainring. i know Grahme obree had a huge one on some tt bike he built but ive never seen anything over 60.

So either he was uninformed like i suspect or i just shunned a time trial god.

So, uh, what kind of power output are we looking at for this 50mph in the flats?

I have no idea what the story is behind that.
Someone posted in in the past, so I saved it.

What's the story with that one? Can someone really be faster riding out of the saddle for an entire track race?

We use to have a member that rode century's without a saddle.

I was at Bonneville in 1985 when John Howard went 152+ behind a Vesco streamliner. Don't know how many teeth it had, but his chainring barely cleared the ground.

He had an intermediate shaft between the crank and the rear axle, so it did not require huge chainrings.
It is above the rear wheel and just behind his butt in this photo: https://www.canosoarus.com/08LSRbicycle/LSR%20Bike01.htm

This is apparently the FB page of the owner of the 80/100 chainrings: https://www.facebook.com/abilio.lagoa

And while I was googling for that, I found this: https://www.socaltrailriders.org/foru...1&d=1314409971

10wheels, are those your personal rings and is that you in the picture? did you have them machined? and was the lack of saddle for weight or motovation?

The massive chain wheels are used in motor pacing, there is a record category for seatless riding where the gearing tends to be higher due to the standing position and lower rpm used.

Still haven't seen an answer to this, though one calculator that I found online was estimating an output of ~1400 watts. Yeah, not too many people gonna do that.
