Kenda Karvs 700x28 knobby tires (or comparable) -- anyone tried it?
 

I got transferred to new building at work. Behind the main campus is a really extensive dirt trail system. I've done a couple of rides on it with my 29er, but that bike is a bit overkill for a basically flat trail system and kind of a pain to transport to/from work since I usually ride it on the weeknds.

"n + 1" is obviously the answer (ie, Cyclocross bike), but I'd like to try riding on a drop-bar road bike to see if I even like it.

One of my bikes (that I could leave at work) is a Rival-equipped Fuji Newest 1.0. Has anyone run the 700x28 Kenda Karv knobby tires with success? Other tire suggestions welcome.

Hi Bob,

I have a set on my All-City Mr. Pink and I love them. They've got good traction and I haven't had a flat in the 500+ miles I've put on them. They're the first tires I've had on my bike, so I'm not sure how the rolling resistance is compared to others, but I still feel pretty fast! They've survived gravel, glass, and pretty much any common issue that slick tires would never survive. I highly recommend!

RTC: Thanks for the response. What size tires are you running? Standard road rim brakes, I assume?

700x28 Vittoria Randonneur on my Volagi. They did fine on an extensive dirt expedition a few weeks back.

I've seen those at REI and might give them a shot. I guess I can't ask you about brake clearance though, Mr Disc Brakes. ;) How do you like the discs?

I'm a big fan of mild off road stuff on skinny tyres - dunno why. It's fun in a goofy way.

Any chance we can get a pic of this trail of yours?

what psi are you guys running?

Sorry, should have clarified in my first post. Mine are 700X28's as well. They have the same tread as you have pictured. I usually run at about 90'ish PSI.

I was running the 700x28 Randonneurs at 85 psi. I put back on the 700x23 4 Seasons for now, once the rain kicks in I'll switch back. Disc brakes are nice. Very nice. Yes they add a bit of weight but once you get used to the modulation and go back to rim brakes, you realize what you're missing.
