Garmin Edge 500 Upload Problem
My ride on Sunday wouldn't appear to upload either on Garmin Connect or Strava. Next few rides were uploadable but was unable to upload today's ride. Has anybody else had this happen were your ride didn't appear? Have had my Garmin for a year and a half now and no problems before this. Latest software was installed right after release.

I had a similar problem last week. I installed the software update, then used the 500 for a trainer workout. I thought I had lost the workout (and was mightily peeved), but what apparently happened was that the software update reset the date to August '99. The workout was there, just at the beginning of my uploads on Garmin Connect. All I had to do was take the 500 outside and let it find the satellites, and it reset to the correct date and time.
If that workout is at the beginning of your updates due to a date change, you can open the workout and edit the date.

I don't know if this will help, but my Edge 500 downloads more consistently and much faster when I don't keep a bunch of old work outs stored on it.

There are times when Garmin devices don't correctly truncate the .TCX files, which can lead to two files getting merged together. When that happens, the "new ride" won't actually upload to any of these sites because they actually see the ride as old since it wasn't correctly split apart from your last ride.
Look at the history folder of your Garmin device and see if your last ride is actually "bigger" than it is. It's possible your new ride got attached to the end of your old one. If that's the case, there are some free tools available online that will allow you to split them apart. You can also send Strava customer support the file and they'll actually split it for you.

FWIW, I have a better success rate using IE when I upload to GarminConnect.

+1 on this, although it may have nothing to do with your issue. I don't care about keeping the old files and they definately slow down the uploads so I clean 'em out every few months.

I've had this happen a few times, but when I consistently process my rides, I don't have a problem.
1. Power on the unit & start the ride.
2. At the end of the ride, press the Start/Stop button to stop recording
3. Press and hold the 'Reset' Button. This should complete the writing of the ride to memory. (I think lack of this step is what may have been causing my problems in the past)
4. Power off the unit
5. Upload the ride to all of your sites / programs (I upload to Strava, Garmin Connect, & Garmin Training Center)
6. Delete old activities (I delete anything over a month old)
Since I started doing this, I haven't had any upload problems, truncated data, corrupt data, etc.

You're right. This is because Garmin Connect has to look through all the files on the Edge 500 to find ones that haven't been uploaded. It has to look at the date on each file and then check your data on GC to see if it has been uploaded. The more files you have, the longer it takes. If you want to keep the old ride data, connect the Edge to your computer. When your computer recognizes the device, open it in Windows Explorer. Open the Garmin device in Explorer, then go to Garmin\Activities\. and copy the .FIT files to your hard drive. Each FIT file contains the data for a ride.

I had this problem today. I went on a 3.5 hour ride and pressed stop, then turned off the computer to save the battery until I arrived home. The ride was not found on the Garmin Edge 500 when I tried to upload it. I searched the Garmin Edge forums and found these instructions, which also are in the manual. https://forums.garmin.com/showthread...ost-or-deleted
"until Garmin wakes up and addresses this issue, following these steps should "save" your activity:
"until Garmin wakes up and addresses this issue, following these steps should "save" your activity:
- Hit Start/Stop at the end of the ride
- Press the Lap/Reset button and wait for the 3, 2, 1 countdown
- The timer will reset to 00:00:00
- Your activity should be saved."
It seems that after the activity is saved, it will upload. Apparently this instruction manual describes this process, only I forgot what I had read until now I was reminded when reading the Garmin forum.
I guess my data is gone forever, but I will know for next time.

As others have said, I had the same issue and I just deleted all activities on the device and all was good after that. I make sure to delete everything every few months or so.

I have a 705, and had similar issues a couple of times.
The unit has a limited memory. Your most recent ride is not lost but doesn't show as a saved ride. If you delete old files (rides), the most recent one will show up. You have the option to delete all old files, or to keep only the most recent 3 months, and delete files older than that.

Try going into the device via My Computer and manually deleting the old rides stored in the device. Back when my rides stopped showing up on connect.garmin.com, I did this and things were back to normal. It should be fine deleting the old items because they should be uploaded, but in any case, I recommend copying the files over to an external folder before deleting them (or I'm guessing cutting and pasting the items works fine as well).

I delete rides from my Garmin after I upload them to Strava or GC. I don't go through the slightly involved process outlined by ChrisM, I just stop the Garmin at the end of the ride and then plug it into my computer using the USB cable and upload it. Takes about 5 mins.

I know some people have this problem, but I have never had to reset after a ride. I just switch off and upload when I'm home. My wife too.
