Shorts for Thick Legs?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shorts for Thick Legs?

Today my legs were in a lot of pain at the end of 63 miles. My toes were numb for the last 25 miles.

I noticed when I got home that as soon as I took my shorts off, a lot of the pain drained away in about 5 minutes. So I got out my tape measure and a string.

My thigh just above the knee is 22" in circumference. My large shorts on each leg at the elastic are 15". That means that Lycra has to stretch 50% on each leg. I am positive it is cutting off circulation.

The problem is that I don't see any shorts makers that list the thickness of each leg. I am guessing that I need leg circumference around 20-21" to be comfortable. If I go one or two sizes larger on the shorts, the top will be too big.

Does anyone know of any shorts makers that list the size of their legs or makes shorts for thick legs?

My problem is the thickness of my waist dwarfs the thickness of my thighs. but by grace, lycra can stretch one heck of a long way.

im in the same boat. just hunt a lot.

medium length fits fine, some bands stretch enough but then the chamois is in the wrong position.

some large bibs fit ok. it just kinda sucks

I measured mine at 23" the other day while looking for winter clothing. I don't know how large your waist is. This is the brand I wear.

https://www.aerotechdesigns.com/

I wear their top shelf in large size. That gives me plenty of room for the thighs. Their jerseys run true to size as well. If you really want a chuckle, check out the sizes listed for the arm and leg warmers under their cold weather section. Those aren't made for muscular people!

+1 on Aerotech Top Shelf. I've got a 38" waist and thick thighs. The Top Shelf are very comfortable and I like the chamois design as well. The Primal shorts that were given out at the Tour de Cure have also been excellent but I wish I'd ordered them a size smaller, the XL said from 36-40" waist but they are way looser than the L Top Shelf that I have which listed 34-38".

My legs are 22" and I find that my team kit of bib shorts, the large Hincapie Velocity, fits very well. No constriction, good materials.
Here is a link to it:

It is a custom only pair, but I would bet much of their commercial line fits similarly.

I cut the band out of three of my shorts. I am going to try them on my trainer for a couple hours tomorrow night. The shorts definitely feel more comfortable.

I put one of the bands on my leg after I cut it out of the shorts. You can see how much it is compressing my leg:

Certain profession athletes, wannabe athletes, and women shave their legs. I am none of them.

Uh oh...

Have you tried some shorts that don't have a sticky grip? ie. some of the LG stuff has this super soft grip cloth (?) on the ends of their bibs.

I've found that some of the Campy bibs seem to have looser legs realative to waist size. However, others of their line do not. It seems to come down to which fabrics they use.

Pearl Izumi seem to be some of the worst that I have. The waists can be down right loose while the legs are too tight. However, their top end shorts that have the lycra bad style hems and no grippy elastic are better.

Sugoi, I cut the elastic on in order to restore circulation to my lower thighs and legs.

Thats my 2 cents,
