Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can I powder coat these without causing problems?

I had to get a bigger clamp kit for my ritchey 1 bolt carbon seat post. I guess they dont make them in black for the 7x9.6mm for my specialized romin evo carbon rails. They make them in black for the alloy but not for the carbon. I really would really prefer to have them black to fit in with the seatpost and saddle. I dont know anything about powder coating so I thought I would ask if anyone would know better than myself. I dont want to go ahead with it come to find out that it added to much thickness to the clamp and now it wont fit.

never came to mind I guess. Its a $200 seatpost, I was thinking it would deserve a better option than rattle can. would I need to use sand paper on them first in preperation?

Not sure, but anodizing might work better.

If that is a polished finish as it appears, then yes sanding the surface will allow paint to adhere better.

As long something is metal it can be powder coated, the only issue i see is with the seatpost, why? because you will add like 2 mm more of pain and the seatpost might not fit afterwards. I would PC a half if i was you.

Shouldn't be a problem at all. If the powder coating doesn't work, use some sort of spray, or spray and bake like a dura-coat or ceracoat. or something. I've used the stuff on guns and it's hard to damage those finishes.

They'll be hard to sand, but if you use a similar sized bolt that's long enough (ace hardware) you can pull it through the clamp piece and get it from behind with pliers. Some 600 will be more than aggressive enough unless that's a coating and not a polish.

If its aluminum painting can be a problem. Leave it, but buy a black carbon railed saddle

you can powdercoat just the outside. Take it to a plating shop near you and they'll probably do it for a few bucks next time they do something black...

Powdercoating will work and the thickness of the film isn't that thick. I am able to powdercoat spokes and even if it gets on the threads it doesn't interfere with clearance...and spoke have a lot less allowable interference in their fit.

Spray painting aluminum is tricky, needs to etched and primed with a good primer. As far the the bolt, I'd get an anodized alloy or Back Ti one. Save some weight.

Essentially. Just don't heap on the powder. If you take it somewhere they should have high temp masking that they can use if you're concerned.

EDIT: Personally I do all of my own powdercoating in the garage. FWIW - I think some of you guys think powdercoating leaves a really thick paint film. On small parts it really doesn't. Also that's up to the person applying it and how well it will flash.
