Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am stupid lucky: Crash report

Team ride today, a few of us decided to head up Madera Canyon which is a killer climb that just keeps getting steeper to a max of around 15% near the end. Myself and a teammate got to the top and headed back down. Steep right hand turn: I apply some brake near the entrance and immediately know that I am carrying way too much speed to clear the turn. My bike begins to slide and I veer off near the apex. There are boulders around which i launch off into the air straight towards a road sign. I push my bike towards the sign in mid air as I am coming head over heels to help slow me down. Luckily the sign gave way as I tumbled onto my shoulder then backside. I came away with just some bruising and scraps. The bike didnt fare so well (broken in three places):

I'm glad you are o.k. I'm glad it's you that's o.k. and your bike that's messed up and not the other way around!

Cheers,

Amazing. You obviously had a moment of clarity during the whole event and possibly saved your own life.

Yep, sure is easier to replace a bike then mend a busted up body. Glad you're OK and hope you get a new ride soon.

Glad you're ok, more or less.

But please, when you go into a turn too hot, do not bail. Try to make the turn. Most of the time you will. Bikes can corner much harder than we think they can. If you really are going too fast you'll just low side. That's still safer than heading off the road, unless there's a pile of mattresses right there.

Absolutely solid advice here, thanks. Funny thing is that I did once lowside a road bike and I was much worse off than I am right now. That is pure, STUPID, luck.

For what is worth after you recover from the crash, that frame is fixable (not the fork though). I learned that the hard way with my Cervelo R3. That is one advantage of carbon. Whether it is worth it or not would depend. I would guess it would be about $600-1000 to repair it. It would probably be stronger when they were done but slightly heavier.

My thoughts exactly.

A few months ago I screwed up a downhill left turn, bike went into the curb and I went over the bars. I was very fortunate in landing the right way up, on a patch of grass. My bike and I had a few scratches but nothing major.

Found my front wheel has a small ding in it and it is slightly out of true. Darn. These psimet wheels were true as the day they arrived until this.
I will not get this frame repaired, not worth it. I am seeing some slightly used Evo framesets out there, might be time to upgrade. hahaha, ouch that hurt...

Well, you dodged a bullet. If you have kids, hug them tight and tell them you love them.

Glad to see you write about this.

If you're the original owner of the frame, Cannondale does have a 'crash replacement' policy. Check with your local Cannondale dealer and see what kind of deal he can make for you with them. May not be worth it, but it just may be. Can't hurt to ask.

Glad you're ok. Your bike can be fixed easier than you.

Im not the original owner. It looks like the Caad 10 gets superb reviews. My only worry there is that I do a lot of long (4+ hour) rides and worry about the comfort level compared to a Supersix. It is about $1000 cheaper though and that saved dough could be used to slap on these tubulars that are sitting around.

I've had my CAAD10 about a year and have taken it on lots of long rides (including a few 10+ hour rides). Never really thought about wanting more ride comfort during that time.

I own a Roubaix and a CAAD10, but last year I ended up doing Death Ride on the CAAD. Honestly it's a great frame - I would think that putting some nice wheels on there could allow to fine tune your ride quality quite effectively. I don't find it a very harsh ride - getting the right fit is key to comfort IMO.
