Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrade now or wait

I have been planning to upgrade to a nice road bike. After researching it, I know what I want and have the finances in order. Unfortunately, between work schedule, less daylight and cold weather, I am getting into the season where I don't get to ride as much as I would like. Most of the time I will be limited to some weekend riding.

Does it make any sense to upgrade now and have the bike sitting most of the time, or should I just wait until spring approaches when I have more opportunity to get out and ride? Any thoughts or things I should consider in making this decision?

You can probably get a better deal on a bike now than in the spring. A lot of shops still have 2012 bikes and are selling them at discount to make room for 2013s.

You only live once. afaik.

This is probably not the best place to ask anyway - everyone loves new bikes!

If you are planning on getting a 2012 bike, now is the time to do it. If not, you can wait until next year or next fall, when the prices again drop.

That said, I had planned on buying a 2012 frame from my LBS as each fall, they have huge price drops. But this year, they sold out of all 2012 stock. From what my LBS said, a lot of manufacturers have been reducing their production runs to avoid having a bunch of product being sold at a discount at the end of the year.

Good things for me to consider. I have not been able to find what I am looking for in my size in a 2012. I believe they were sold out some time ago. topflightpro is right about the stock. It might make sense to jump on it before I lose out again.

I agree about only living once. In fact, I have a birthday next week, maybe I deserve a nice present!

I just got a great deal on a '12 Cannondale a few weeks ago. I am very happy with the price I paid.
Good=new bike. Bad=time change and it is now dark by the time I get home from work.

Go for it!

By now and upgrade again as soon as possible. Grow your fleet of bikes indefinitely. One can never own too many bikes.

BUY NOW!!! This is the best time of year to buy, especially if you don't need an oddball size, as many shops and online sellers have sales now.

Yes, like these guys stated. The off season is a great time to buy a bike. My last winter purchase saved me $700. Not to mention, a new bike might motivate you to ride more during your "off" time.

I was down at my local shop today. They are having a Christmas sale and since I felt that I should do my part to support the economy, I ordered this

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bik...iteapexcompact

I should get it by next weekend.

Either way is ok.

The cold weather may make test-riding a challenge. But I do agree you are likely to get better deals in the off season.
