Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OEM 2008 Zipp 404 tubulars w/ non-dimpled 2004 rims & 2005-2008 hubs and decals?

I'm trying to find out more about a pair of Zipp 404 tubulars that I have found. They have the old 2004, pre-dimpled rims (18/24 spokes) but the 2005-2008 hubs with the red cassette body and a newer decal. The seller claims to have gotten them new in 2008 direct from Zipp (they work at a bike shop). I contacted Zipp and they stated that they did produced smooth rims up until early 2012 and sold some tubular wheels with these old, 2004 era rims to bike manufacturers for OEM wheels to spec out on their high end bikes. What company would put old rims on newer hubs, then put a new decal on it and put it on a 2008-ish bike? Plus, I would figure they would use carbon clinchers due to glueing liability and hassle. Consumers dropping that much change on a bike equipped stock with 404s probably would also want the newest rims. I'd like to find out if this person is being honest with how they acquired the wheelset. Can anyone point me towards a stock bike that came with a 404 wheelset as I described? Thanks.
