Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Coffee Shop - Matte vs Gloss

A topic on todays post ride coffee shop banter. Two riders in our group both with new bikes, both predominantly matte black in color. One of them has glossy black carbon water bottle cages, the other matte black carbon water bottle cages. Discussion ensued on whether the cage should match the bike, or whether mixing and matching was allowed. Ridiculous? Yep. But a lively discussion ensued nevertheless, all in fun, but some had strong opinions which I guess in a crowd of fickle roadies I shouldn't find surprising. Thoughts?

I can't outright call this a stupid off-season question since I labored over this very question only recently. But since changing from glossy black plastic to matte carbon cages, I can safely say that the distinction will be forgotten within the first minute of a ride.

What else is not matte black? What shape/style are the cages? I'm inclined to say that if the frame has a flat, uniform appearance, then the cages should match the components, e.g., if the brake levers and crank arms are glossy, the cages should be, too. Silver may be a better choice than either matte or glossy black. The cages are tacked-on accessories, not extensions of the frame.

The bottle cages must match the bikes. Everything must match the bikes. The riders' helmets must be matte. Ideally, the riders themselves will change their names to Matt.

Water bottle cages are the most important accessory for any bike. Many bikes of the same model will be painted the same so the cage is an excellent way to personalize a machine. Much thought must go into their purchase.

I suggest a few more rides to coffee shops to discuss the matter further as one should not enter into this lightly.

Neon pink is the only appropriate colour choice in this instance. Any other opinion is just due to uninventive, boring, sheeplike minds.

Bottle cages should always match the frame color of your cycling specific sunglasses.
If they don't you're a newb and deserve to be dropped.

Matte cage with matte frame. I even recently sanded down a glossy carbon post and resprayed it with a satin finish to better match the satin finish on the frame.

Ha....all in this thread would fit in great on our Sunday ride....hit us up if you ever make out to Portland! I have to admit I'd never given this topic a shred of thought as my bike came with cages. I have to say though I'd agree with kbarch in that the cages should match the components. One of the matte bikes had a Campy group set with gloss cages, looked sharp. That being said, matte cages on a gloss frame just seems like it would be all wrong, regardless of components. I'll just stick to enjoying the post ride cappuccino and my stock cages.

I like cages that are a bit of a contrasting color when the frame is all the same. On an all black bike, some white bottle cages would look quite classy, or pink, as mentioned above. Red or yellow would also be acceptable colors.

I'm still working on cleaning my bike let alone accessorizing the colors on it. I will have a mish mash of decent riding clothes / gear and I expect, hell intend, for it to be both bright, and an eyesore.

At some point, high viz bright pink rapha club jersey, camo patterned helmet (it was cheapest), black bibs, silver cannondale, black cages, black tape, black olddd 2008 circa oakleys.

I doubt you will be concerned with the cages when I penetrate your iris and make your soul cry.

Well, matte ANYTHING besides tires, tape, hoods and saddle would be all wrong on a glossy frame. Satin clear finish metal, OK...

This decision took me half a second to decide. I haven't regretted it since.

The sad part is probably most of the bikes in the group were flat black. I mean "matte" black, sorry. Matte sounds a bit more hip for marketing purposes.
