Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

were those random pads something like these? https://www.trpbrakes.com/category.ph...d=187&subcat=0

I used those initially and had the same experience. Actually smelled like car brake pads burning at times.

Using the red swiss stops now. the red streak around my rim matches my color scheme :-)
I'm still eating those up pretty fast. I figure it costs about $1 every time I have to stop from 30 mph. I'll have to check out the Black Prince.

I rode this entire past season on Planet-X 50mm carbon tubulars. I only got in about 1000 miles last season but I had no problems with the wheels or tubies. It's a little tricky in crosswinds but they roll so nicely I can't bring myself to go back to my Easton clinchers.

I did this when I got my carbon wheels this summer. I installed the tire on the rear wheel in the parking lot prior to warming up. The crit was rainy and scary with a 35 mph downhill sweeping corner with lots of lines painted on the road. Fortunately they were predictable in the rain but I was very tentative for the first few laps.

I intended to get an aluminum training set but I only have one PT hub and I don't think I'll be getting another any time soon. It's nice to train with the deeper section though for the opportunity to ride in a variety of conditions. I have ~6K miles on them so far.

I don't have anything as deep as you mention in the OP, but I ran 38mm carbon tubulars (Boyd) all year. Love them.

I train on carbon tubulars every day because my budget does not allow another set of wheels.

I've been taking budget into consideration with tubulars and that was the main reason I am avoiding them full time. We are talking 1500-2000miles tops before replacing the tires right? That is alot of tire replacement depending on your mileage.

Anyone with CF that doesn't stop almost as well as aluminum should try different pads and check their setup. There shouldn't be that much different (not counting riding in mountains with lots of long descents).

I have at least 3k on my current Conti Sprinters. The rear is at the end of its life, and will be replaced before race season starts up, but it's been plenty durable. The front has plenty of life left in it.

Longevity will vary just as much with tubulars as clinchers, it just depends on tire choice.

x2. I used mine in a rain soaked ride last weekend, and I didn't notice any difference between them and my psimet aluminum wheels that I've used in the past. It isn't like with carbon wheels you need to release a parachute or go all fred flinstone to stop.

I know this thread is two years ago but I would just like to ask on updates on your yoeleo china wheelset. I just ordered a 60mm carbon alloy clincher last week with 23mm width from farsports. why alloy? I just want to be on the safer side and faster switching on my old wheelsets without the hassle of changing the pads.

They probably aren't that much different than any other chinese clincher, but I'm digging the extra width for better handling and hopefully won't have any problems with pinch flats.

I may try the reynolds pads. I've just had good luck with the swisstops in the past so decided to use those for now. I have the generic ones they sent with the wheels on my TT bike, but I haven't ridden that bike yet with the new wheels.

I have these:

I don't race, but I do some very spirited group rides, and ride pretty hard on my solo rides. I live on the beach in Southern California, where the wind always screams in the afternoon. I'm 6'01", 160 lbs, and these wheels are remarkably stable, even in crosswinds--the only time I had an issue is when I foolishly rode when there was a gale warning. Other than that, I love 'em.

You'll be happy. Creatre recommended me those wheels and I bought the 50mm U shape with superlight hubs. They have been great. I can compare as well since I have a set of ENVE 3.4 Smart.

PRO: The hubs on the chinese wheels roll better, I think it's because they are ceramic (a $35 option if I recall correctly). The ratchet is also way louder. They blow around a little bit more than the Smarts but I think it's because of the 15mm difference. They are also lighter than the SES by about 80 grams and that can be felt. Only had the front wheel come out of true once and it was because I threw the bike against a wall. Tested in Houston (terrible roads with massive potholes) and they we always good.

CONS: Nowhere near as good braking surface as the $3k wheelset. This is where price difference shows. It is good for rolling terrain when decents don't last much longer than a minute but if you plan to do 5-10 minute decents at 40mph+ on a daily basis I'd get something else. They are LOUD when braking and smell if you prolonge it too much. The money on the SES is on the braking surface. Everything else is equal or better on the chinese wheels for 1/5th of the price.

Hope this helps. I think you'll be satisfied.

Mr. Isberrios1, thanks for the detailed reply with great first hand experience on those chinese wheels. where did you get your 50mm U shaped wheels? is it from yoeleo or farsports? i got the 60mm U shaped 23mm width from farsports. they're shipped right now and im hoping i'll get 'em friday. about the CONS part, you are talking about the braking surface right? i guess you got the carbon braking surface. as for me, maybe i don't have to worry about it because i got the aluminum braking surface. i'll use them as my everyday training wheels until they brake. let's see how long theyll last.

we might say lance is a cheat but who else isn't in pro cycling? well, this was a couple of months before the confession. i really dont know about lance and the rest of the pros. i lost a little interest on watching them race. but i still love riding my bike.

I got mine from Yoeleo. Mine do have the carbon brake surface. I've ridden the ENVEs for about 1k miles and the Yoeleos for about 2.5k miles. They are still great. LIke I said, the only time they came out of true was my own fault. The ENVES were out of true from the getgo.

That's as close as i could ever get to somebody as famous as him in cycling. i've hit three birds in one stone that day. most unforgettable day in my whole life i guess. bo jackson and ken griffey were awesome as well.

thanks for the infos on your wheelsets. im even planning to get rid of my medium sized fuji SST frame. im 5'7.5" and i guess i found out that medium is just not the right size for me. not enough room for adjustment. i think i'll go for a 51-52cm effective top tube. that's a size XS on most road frames.

I was not, wish I would have though. Ironically, I was back home for father's day with my pops who is currently undergoing cancer.

Interesting. Its quite hilly where I am, so I might have to go for the carbon wheels with the alum breaking surface.
