Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

10K may make a down payment on a bribe to get in line for a Sachs.

Why buy a $10,000 MSRP bike, when you could get the same thing from Bikes Direct for $5,000?

Although I like the look of women in flannel shirts and jeans. If she skipped the beard, a recumbent might work

If she's serious about a folder either for travel or daily commuting use and has that kind of budget to play with putting more of it towards a fully awesome folder seems like the way to go to me.

I'd look at Bike Friday too.

Thread drift: Skip the Ti option but check the SON dynamo hub option. The Ti pieces are not made in England and don't really save that much weight. Also, skip the stupid rear rack (you can't fold the bike with anything on it) and opt for the front loading system. If she has extra cash to blow, Guu Watanabe has some super spiffy Brompton bags (another linky).

I should add, I have very limited knowledge of folding bikes. She just mentioned the Brompton name and I randomly grabbed an image on their website to post here. Not exactly sure what model she was looking at.

I refuse to read this whole thread, but have only one suggestion - Parlee Z5 SLi (Tall head tube option) with Dura-Ace Di2 or Record EPS and extra nice carbon clinchers like Enve 3.4...

Wrench Science shows that configuration coming in around $12,000 for Di2.

With careful shopping and haggling with a decent LBS, one could bring a build like that in for right at $10K. I did one, without wheels, for around $8K, using Zipp carbon cockpit components.

So the folder is a second bike for things like commuting or travel, and backing up the main bike, and the total budget is 10K? This makes more sense to me, a lot of sense given what you've said about the objectives here. I think it lets you specialize a bit more with the choices.
