Is this a good deal? Upgraded 2006 specialized allez expert double for $800?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this a good deal? Upgraded 2006 specialized allez expert double for $800?

I found a bike on craigslist but not sure if it is a great deal or not.

It's a 2006 specialized allez expert double that has been upgraded with mostly dura-ace 7800 groupset. Well kept by mechanic ridden mostly indoors on a trainer. He is selling for $800. Here are the specs. What do you think?

Dura ace 7800 shifters/levers, brakes, rear derailleur
Ultegra front derailleur
Velocity wheelset with 105 hubs
700x23 conti gatorskin tires

here is the listing:
https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/m...485888718.html

Thanks!

Maybe not a great deal but a good deal. The components will last quite a while, they show good taste IMO.

Ok. So maybe try to talk him down a little. The other question I have is whether it makes sense to get a slightly older bike with higher end dura-ace stuff over a new bike with lower end components (105, etc). Would you rather have older dura-ace or newer 105?

Definitely nicer bike with 105. Other than weight there isn't much difference in 105 and Dura Ace when it comes to performance.

At that price ($700-800) I'd be tempted to look for a used entry level carbon fiber bike of the same vintage with 105. $800 just seems like a lot of money for a 6yr old mostly aluminum bike. You can get a new brand name aluminum bike with 105 for around $1k on sale. The one advantage to that Allez is that it appears to have a good set of wheels on it which is the weak link on many bikes in that price range.

Who puts Dura Ace on a bike to ride it on a trainer? Ridden indoors, yeah right.

For a trainer, nonetheless.

I've seen expensive carbon fiber road bikes on craigslist setup like that so it's not unheard of. But yeah, the mostly ridden on trainer business sounds like the old "only driven to church on Sundays" line for a used car.

Good value, if it's a good fit
the spec allez is a great frame
and even though 105 and ultegra is very nice stuff, very serviceable - i have bikes with 105, ultegra & 7800 - 7800 is clearly way above the other two - finest fele, precision stuff, I expect it to work for a lot of yrs and miles...
wheelset is good serviceable and would make a good daily training set, then you can save up for a premium wheelset. But the 105 hubs will do a lot of miles and roll with some much more expensive stuff, solid rim, whatz not to like ???
gatorskins - to me - feel like 'run-flat' tires for road bikes - some really nice rubber and this bike will light up!
it looks in good condition - check the chain for stretch, and maybe put on a new - otherwise, the bike is well worth the price

ignore the low seat and all the other funky fit stuff - will it fit you ???

if the chainrings are in good shape - 7800 Dura ace over anything else... (I have NOT had any significant time on new Campy...). I luv those 7800 Brifters ... easily over new 105

My backup bike which sits on a trainer gets all the hand me downs from the other bikes in the stable,

So it currently has dura ace 7800, fulcrum 3's, red calipers.

The answer I suspect is a lot of us transfer older parts to a bike that sees little use.
