Cycling shorts... what comforts your booty best?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling shorts... what comforts your booty best?

so i'm relatively new to road cycling, i got into it because i can no longer run due to AVS of the hip, anyway i started with a pair of basic cannondale "inners" ive gone to the skin tight kind now and i seem to like bellweather for the pirce. they are pretty good? i live in SW florida so i really need something that breathes. what do you use? and im talking 60 or less a pair.

Lately... nothing. I have some skin tight shorts with padding I use in summer, but to be honest I don't need or want the pads anymore. I like my rock hard seat with mountain climbing pants for winter. This coming summer I think I will try and find some unlined cycling shorts.

The chamois in the shorts are not primarily for padding but to wick moisture away from your butt and perineal area. I'm also a Florida rider and I can tell you that almost any of the better shorts will do what they are suppose to do. I had a pair of Bellweather shorts that I really liked, but now I use the Pearl Izumi Attack shorts ($75-80). The major difference in price for shorts and bibs is the number of panels that are used to make them and the type of wicking material used. The problem with the less expensive shorts is that they all tend to have elastic waistbands and if you have any kind of a gut on you, they will make the waistline very uncomfortable, especially on long rides. If you can find some in your price range with drawstrings in the waistband, try those and see how they compare to the ones you have now. If you continue to have uncomfortable rides after using different shorts/bibs, consider changing to a different saddle.

www.aerotechdesigns.com try the bibs - to die for! Best pad I've used (admittedly, due to my current uber Clyde status, I have few choices as they're one of the few that has bigger sizing)

I use a lot of different shorts trying to find the right ones. Bellweather pro forma bibs can be gotten at good prices, one if the better pads I've had and very comfortable on long rides. Also great compression in the quads. I never understood that until these shorts. Only downside is that the bib straps are a little rough on the nipples after a while.

PI Select level bibs nice and cheap and great shorts, Elite level also good padding less bulky but fit is too short for me which I don't like.

Castelli more expensive but well worth it. The progretto x 2 (sp?) is much nicer than their other one IMO probably the best shorts in my rep right now along with the proformas from bellweather.

hope this helps!

I only use Voler Bibshorts with the Trilogy pad, or Castelli shorts with the Progetto x2 pad. These are my favorites after years of trying and experimenting with many, many others.

Best short for me is a good bike fitting. A good fitting will trump the shorts any day.

That said, I like DeMarchi Contour Plus bib shorts the best of what I've tried. Have used Voler, AeroTechDesigns, Pearl Izumi, and Castelli. All have been more then $50 and less than $100.

Yeah, the Voler Elite Bibshorts (Trilogy chamois) are my top pick. Tried various models of Castelli, Giordana, Specialized, and Pearl Isumi and I always seem to come back to the Volers. Looks like they are on sale right now on their site! May pick up a pair of tights...

My favorites are the Nashbar Tecumseh and Isolation shorts (same thing except for a very minor styling difference). Very comfortable to me and usually on sale for a good price. Their liner shorts use the same pad and are what I use with my winter tights and under street shorts.

Pearl Izumi or any padded shorts, but the most important part of ensuring comfort is Brooks!

Nalini for me. Preferably the ones with the non-sculpted pads.

These have minimal chamois, unlike too many mfgrs these days who are letting the marketing dept design the chamois, resulting in big fat thick padding that bulges up and puts pressure where there should be none.

I like a chamois that's on the thin side and pretty flexible/stretchy. Dense pads don't work with my butt/saddle combo.

I used to think I liked thing pads, but then I tried some by cytech and I've changed my mind. My Rapha shorts have quite a thick pad, but it works somehow. They're my favourite for very long days.

Voler is probably your best bet in the $60 range. Many shorts, of no better quality, go for twice that. I have several pair and like them as well as anything.

I'm far from a Clyde at 6' 2" and 155-160, but I also find Aero Tech bibs to be as good if not better than bibs costing twice as much.

Never tried anything beyond the cheapest Pearl Izumi shorts (Quest I think they're called). They were good enough for me.
