San Diego bike shops???

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

San Diego bike shops???

I'm down visiting in San Diego near Mira mesa. I have a couple cousins that live down here that cycle/tri's And I asked them where I could go to scope out some lbs. I went down to "trek" which is trek and Recently cannondale after dropping cervelo, then Black mountain in Mira mesa which carries trek And Specialized and I gotta say... if these Represent your"LBS" scene, I feel bad you Californians!!! Lol. When i Was talking to The sales Rep at "trek", I wanted to slap him in the face like like rick james did to Charlie murphy when he told me that cannondale is finally starting to make some headway in the cycling industry over the past year....WTF!!!!********** He said cdale Had just never Been a Quality bike in The past, but with the moves They made with The new evo, they Are starting to circle The corner. I Just shook my head And laughed. They just dropped cervelo and brought on cdale. They had like 6 cdales total in the entire store. I walked out completely disappointed.

In Portland we have several nice stores that are huge with inventory of bikes, clothes and accessories. So I'd love to find a good shop nearby that carries cannon ale. Any suggestions? I'm heading to Oceanside today, any good shops that you would say are worthy of a visit?

I'm sure there are some nice shops here. I'm not saying I think all bike shops are like these 2 by the way, just looking for some other locations that I can get my LBS fixing.

HiTech Bikes in Kearny Mesa is where I get most my stuff - dont think they have c-dales (they just started carrying a bunch of different brands so I could be wrong - its been 4 paychecks since ive been there). Nytro in Enicinitas/cardiff/leucadia (forget which one - on the coast route) is supposed to have c-dales. Did they still have the Cervelo R5VWD's with super record for $7 G's at TREK? I go in there when my kid has gymnastics down the road to kill time. Probably missed you if you went yesterday.

Hey tough guy.

While you are sitting on the keyboard complaining, you are missing one of the most epic and blazing fast rides in the country....

It's on right now, right there.

No need to feel bad for anyone in SoCal, there is much actual riding to be done....

Is it on TV? I don't have a lot of time to drift away since I'm here some family. Leaving here to go to oceanside in a couple hours.

Mike the guy told me about hi tech but I couldn't find it and I didn't have my phone with me to GPS. It was getting late and the family was already expecting me home so I decided to just go home. I was looking for Louis garneau stuff and the guy at trek said hitech was a dealer.

Geez, sorry. I may have come off like a dick. I.ll throw you a bigger bone here.

San Diego north county has some of the finest riding and racers in the country. Like world class people and terrain. It is not an accident pro teams go there to train.

You are in the heart of it. Take advantage.

Google swamis ride. It is on right now. They do a Sunday version too. SDBC has a ride as well, but not as cool. There is also a Thursday, I think, tri ride that goes through Pendleton to OC.

You want to see what the San Diego bike scene is about? Hit those rides. It is no joke.

I live in PDX as well and I can tell you that Portland fast does not equal SanDiego fast.

Enjoy. You have a great opportunity.

See you up here... Cheers!!!!

I'm in Mira Mesa to. There's a lot of shops along Hwy 101 both big and small. Nytro has a lot of bikes and you can rent them to. B&L has mostly Specialized I think but also a lot of stuff. Hi-Tech has a smaller shop along the 101 now.

For the local area there's also Performance in Sorrento Valley and UC Cyclery in La Jolla Village Square. Good places for quick stuff.

Don't consider Trek and Black Mountain the standards here. There's a lot better. GL

I like Black Mountain the service shop is top notch. Got a friend that wrenches at Trek KM as well.

Since you just blasted my two go to LBS I cant help you. You must have some cool shops up there.

IMO the internet killed allot of business at LBS and only a few survive. I am no saint as I buy allot of my stuff online as well.

I suggest you got to Pizza Port on PCH chill outside and watch the local bikes ride by and have some good San Diego Craft Beer and it will improve your mood.

So with that thought I will just go out and ride and earn my evening beer.

Cheers

I'm not a big fan of the Trek Superstores. The one by me (Trek La Mesa) is always voted best bike shop in San Diego and I just don't know why.

As far as finding a good store up in that end of the county, I can't help you. I don't get out there much.

How long are you in town?

HiTech has some clothing on hand but I dont know how much LG. I like the shop and most the guy's know their stuff. Paul the mechanic is pretty knowledgeable and actually once took a Conti 4000s off a display bike for me since they only had one at the time. He is also very straight up. When I was a budding Fred, I approached him about getting a cassette because I got a new chain and the interwebz said I needed one. He said they would be glad to sell me one but I didnt need it. He was replacing a spoke and truing a wheel while I waited because I had a big charity ride in two days.

Alot of people say Bike Bling in Escondido is pretty good. I have never been there so I cant give a first hand account.

I leave tomorrow and nearly all of my Saturday will be taken by family events so there isn't going to be much time. Ill tell you that the thing I did like at trek was one of the girls "dairy air"....it took all my attention for the majority of the time I was in there. So I guess i didn't leave completely disappointed lol.

If that trek store was voted best shop, I can't see why either!

It's not that one that was voted best shop, but its sister store. We have a chain of Trek Superstores here. Took me a while to realize that Trek is a regular brand of bike sold at other non-Trek Superstore stores and that these stores don't exist everywhere.

It's basically like Performance. Except only in San Diego (and one in New Mexico).

Places where you never ask for gear opinion: Big bike shops, Guitar Center and guns/outdoor gear stores. They are too full of commandos.

My own LBS is part of the Trek network (Jax). I go there, say hi, get what I need and leave.

And to me, Cannondale is nowhere near turning that corner because I still feel the sting from their CODA crap days.

I remember hearing about Velo Cult, but never made it to the shop. This explains why I haven't heard about them in a while.

OT: San Diego people - go check out the SoCal forum. Trying to put a SD ride together.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

currently, i like the guys at pulse off of h street in eastern chula vista (next to the pep boys and across the street from costco & regal theaters). good wrench and really down to earth. don't make it down there all that much since i moved 2.5 years ago tho. lots of high end & tri stuff but have had some great affordable stuff in the past from kuota & orbea.

We went to nitro yesterday. Interesting shop but still sub par IMO. I'm not used to seeing tri gear, running shoes, swim gear at a bike shop.

Bike Bling in Escondido has the most stock. Nytro and B&L used to be the big shops but they seem to have lost a lot of business to Velo Hangar and Revolution in Solana Beach and Ride in Encinitas. I go to Pacific Coast Cycles in Oceanside; it's a block from my house and it's owned by the legendary Chuck Hoeffer.

Bicycle Warehouse has been good to me, I don't know what other people have experienced with them though. I bought a bike two years ago from them, have only been in a couple of times since and remember the bike I bought and sometimes my name. I like shopping from them.

The one in PB is the best. I grew up there and remember when it was Mountain Bike warehouse. The other ones are spotty. I have bought bikes from them since I was 17.
