Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is the first time I have noticed this thread, haven't been around much the past few days. I want to say thank you very much to everyone that has posted in it. It really means a lot to me.

On Wednesday February 6th my dad had gone to cardiac therapy (had a quadruple bypass in October), after that he went for blood work to check on the cumodin (sp?), then to Taco Bell to grab a bite to eat. After that he headed home to pick up my mom to go to the Dog Track for a few hours. Unfortunately before they could go to the track Dad started getting a headache. A few minutes later his head was throbbing so my mom took him to the ER thinking he was having another mini stroke since he had three of them over the past three months. My Dad walked out to the vehicle, got in it, and talked to Mom the majority of the drive to the ER. Once they got to the ER he couldn't get out of the vehicle.

My mom ran into the ER and told them that she thought my Dad was having a stroke. They immediately went to the vehicle to get him and took him straight in for a CT Scan. Five minutes later my dad had gone into a coma. The CT scan showed a major acute subdural bleeding on the left side of his brain, it was 1.9 cm thick. The ER immediately contacted another hospital that specializes in neuro issues and transported him for a craniotomy. After getting to the ER at 3:00 pm he had been transferred to the other hospital and in surgery by 5:30 pm. They could not have acted any faster.

The doctors told us that they were hoping that he would wake up either that evening or the following day. Unfortunately that did not happen. Dad started having seizures so they had to treat those. He responded to pain and his pupils responded to light very slowly. After a couple of days we were told to hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. We called family in on Friday and they made it in on Saturday. We tried to keep our hopes up but it wasn't easy. On Tuesday we were told that most likely he would never wake up from the coma and that if he did wake up he would be in a vegetative state. At that time we (myself and my mom) made the decision to remove him from life support. My dad would never want to live that way.

I stayed with him in his room when they removed the respirator at 4:05 pm. He quit breathing at 9:12 pm and his heart stopped at 9:13. I stayed with him holding his hand the entire time. The only time I was away from him was when I had to potty and when I had to comfort my mom and have her leave the room. I walked out and informed the family at 9:15 pm. There was no way I was going to let Dad be alone during his last moments.

I stayed at the hospital (slept on the floor) every night except for the first night when I slept on a coffee table. I went home three times for 15 minutes each time to take a shower and grab some clothes. I did everything I could to be there for both my mom and my dad.

My dad may have not always been the nicest guy, he tended to say exactly what he felt. People always knew how they stood with my dad, they also knew that they could count on him. Over 300 people showed up to pay their respects for him on Friday. That made me very proud to be his son. My dad was the best man I have ever known.

Sincere condolences Lowcel. From my own experience, the loss of a parent is a difficult time as you try to balance so many things, trying to help your mom get through this difficult time, keep family informed, make funeral arrangements, deal with your own grief - it sounds as though you did your dad proud in that difficult week. Hang in there.
