Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Long Time Lurker, First Time Poster

Hey Guys!

I've been a long time lurker and I've finally bit the bullet and registered. I am just starting to get back into riding after a lengthy time away from the sport. While I am glad to be getting back into cycling, I am a little overwhelmed by the bike choices out there. I've been looking at bikes down at the local bike shop and also online. I am worried about getting a bike that will hold me back as I get back into shape.

I am a little frustrated with my local bike shop. I told them I really want a fast bike but they keep pushing me towards a hybrid. Back in the day when I was riding regularly I really wanted to look and feel like LeMond! I suppose now I really do look like him, but that doesn't mean I can't have a fast bike. So I'm going to leave it to you guys to tell me what you think. I don't really want to go crazy, I know I have a long ways to go before the bike will hold me back, so here's what I've come up with.

Drivetrain:

Frame:

Wheels:

Nothing too crazy, what do you guys think?

Not much difference between that and a good hybrid.

And nice job making your first post a semi-troll post !

I'm thinking there's probably a reason they're pushing a hybrid for you. I'm thinking it's the answers you give to their questions? (How much do you plan to ride? Where do you plan to ride? How fast do you plan to ride? How's your flexibility? etc...)

Oh, & BTW, bikes are not fast. In fact, they don't move at all. Add a rider into the mix, well then... That's another story.

Good trolls are subtle. You are a bad troll. However, just in case you are not a troll, I would , 1) Find a better LBS 2) adjust your bike dreams somewhat downward.
I really believe that your local Walmart should help you achieve this.

What is your budget? 8-10IK? The gear you have listed would be a build in this price range.

I worry about getting in better shape first.

Well, they are probably looking at you without a slimming mirror with the anti-aging filter.

Have you considered the idea that that particular ship has sailed?

Wow, tough crowd. You guys are about as friendly as the non-waving, non-smiling roadies I see out there...

That aside, I suggest you get the bike you like. Find a bike shop that will let you test some bikes. If you're old and out of shape, but still want a fast bike, just tell the bike shop that's what you want. It's your money, get what you like.

Oh, were all pretty friendly. We just see a troll for what a troll is. Not that we all hate trolls, who of us doesn't have a little troll lingering below the surface. Just trying to educate a fellow troll in the subtleties of this art form.
