Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I'm looking around and hard travel cases cost around $200. There's got to be a cheaper way, right? All we need is a big hard box with something soft inside. We're just stuck in our functional-fixedness. Can any of you guys think of something that would work that might be a little cheaper?

I was thinking maybe a big hard suitcase, but I doubt those would be big enough.

These travel cases weigh as much as 30 pounds. Do you think you could make a box of wood under 30 pounds? Haha...would they let you take a big box of wood on an airplane?

I bet you guys are more creative than me....

I travel alot with my bike (about 5 time/year) to my triathlons and for the most part - the case of choice among most of the Triathletes is the product called "Iron Case". The Iron Case design meets UPS/FEDX size requirements for shipping, and has room for wheels as well. I know for me at least, it's the only product I trust to but my $10,000 TT bike in. Even with this case I bubble wrap everything and use pipe insulation tubing over all of the frame sections - it all then gets sandwiched between 3-layers of thick foam supplied with the case. It's a bit of overkill - but I don't want to take any chances.

Good luck with your choice

I've used cardboard bicycle boxes (the ones your LBS will give you or the ones airlines will sell to you for about $10) a number of times. So far, so good.
