Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling Ride Reports - February 23/24

Last weekend in February! Is it spring where you are yet? Or are you still deep in winter? We're deep in summer here ... highs over 30C/86F every day since we got back to Victoria.

So, tell us about your cycling this weekend (and a few of the surround days if you'd like) ... are you cycling inside? Outside? Where are you going? Got pics?

Friday - nada, except a bit of walking. Walking is all I've been doing this week. Long hot days just sap the energy.

Saturday (today) - maybe some casual cycling ... we're packing up to go see an area close to where we used to live, and there are some nice scenic roads over there.

Well, Saturday ended up being a swimming day. The high topped at 30.2C which wasn't too bad, but we figured swimming would be nicer than cycling.

(And we're camping this weekend )

I did a 250k Permanent today.

My stoker had a friend who is planning to do the Death Valley double century in a week or two, and wanted a good long ride in as warmup. So he rode with us, and we had arranged beforehand that we'd be riding at our own pace. We still finished with 5 riders together, he got a good workout in, but wasn't on the verge of collapse, either, and it was really one of our better rides.

Sunday - 28.37 km ... I really want to start increasing our distance, but we're in such an unsettled state right now (living situation), and it is so hot, that it's difficult to get the cycling in.

Anyway, today's ride was lovely, along the river and pondages, in an area where we used to ride, but haven't in 8 months. The first half of the ride was a decent temperature (maybe only about 28C) but by the second half of the ride it was up and over 33C.

Apparently the high today reached 36C/98.6F ... just a bit warm.

2/24- ride 30 miles the long way around to meet the group https://app.strava.com/activities/42161279

Go for my first group ride ever, + get in my first crash. 37 miles. Hope the other guy who busted his cervelo (p3 i think) is OK (seems to be minor shoulder injury). Best we can figure is he somehow slowed up/lost control, the guy behind him hit him, and I ran over both bringing up the rear. https://app.strava.com/activities/42161276

Ride home thankfully uneventful 7 miles.

All in all, a good day for me. Hopefully the other guy can get his frame replaced. really a shame.

Saturday: just 15 miles of commuting/utility riding.

Sunday: I was going to try to do an 80-90 mile ride (a series of hilly laps), as the temperature was supposed to reach 65*F. But, for the last 2 nights, I have been woken up in the middle of the night (Friday night, by some jerk neighbors blasting music at 3:30am, Saturday night by my roommate being loud at 1:30am), so I didn't sleep well either night. Was tired when I woke up, but I thought I'd go for my ride anyway. As I was about to leave, I realized that my front tire was flat. Rather than try to fix the tube (which I will do later), I just replaced it and got going as quickly as I could.

It was about 50*F and sunny, wind coming from the NE at 5-15mph...then I realized that my route would have a ton of hill climbing (as I live in Alabama, I'm used to rolling hills, not 6000ft of total climbing), and most of the riding uphill was going to be into a headwind. I decided to change plans and do some laps on a flatter route, hoping I could still get in 50 miles or so without losing my mind. But I was so tired and I felt agitated, and I didn't want to continue. I ended up making the ride 38 miles, and I averaged 16.5 mph (an o.k. speed for me, as I've been riding since August 2012). I think I had fun, but I'm still irritated at my roommate for waking me up in the middle of the night, and I just want a solid night's sleep.

When I got home, I took a nap, then had a snack, then went for a 2-hour walk. It was beautiful outside!

I'm still kind of bummed out about today, though. I like having one 3+ hour ride on the weekend, and I didn't get that this weekend, so I feel off somehow. Oh well. :/

Saturday: Fast paced 64 miles, only the second time I ever went over 24 miles. Previous record was 31 miles at a leisurely pace. The last 20 miles was killer, legs are jello, trying to ward off cramps.

Sunday: Taking a break.

I did 45 minutes of spin yesterday and 30 minutes of stationary with a very steep climb. 30 degree weather keeping me indoors. Plus my bike doesn't arrive until mid-week.

150 absolutely gorgeous miles in the Texas hill country yesterday. Temps into the upper 60s. 10400 feet of climbing. Originally planned 223 miles but a chilly morning made a 5am start an undesirable plan so we shortened it to a more reasonable and laid back 150. Today I'm glad we did.

Ray, do you know or ride with Jeff Newberry or David Baxter? They were doing a similar distance in the Austin area yesterday.

I got in another 39 miles this afternoon. Spotted "Moon and Mistletoe":

Nice ride Saturday. Loving studded tires and snow and ice. No summer in this hemisphere.

Jealous of weather. We're thinking about moving to the area. Do you use a Garmin device w/ Strava for this?

Saturday 2/23 I was planning on a 120 mile brevet, but thanks to our lovely Colorado weather I settled for 75 miles before the mercury dropped too low. Great riding weather today, I think we have 6+ inches of snow and it's still coming down

Snelling RR. 60-ish miles of wind and crappy pavement. A NorCal spring classic.

https://app.strava.com/activities/41983166 25 miles yesterday. more relaxed than todays ride, was nice just to get out

https://app.strava.com/activities/42156780
- 34 miles today...averaged 38 degrees. first half was into the wind, which amazingly, hurt less than the second half with the wind. trying to hold 24-26 even with it was rough. i was hurting at the end.

up over 400 actual miles for the year. this day last year, i was in FL on my 2nd day of riding, and had a total of 80 miles in. feels good to be this far ahead of last year

Better late than never - I finally got around to posting my weekend riding report.

Nothing in particular other than this past weekend was a long-weekend for the Makha Bucha Holiday on Feb 25.

The weather here is getting hotter and hotter - summer is here now and March-April will be the hottest months in Thailand.

Saturday - I rode my usual solo 100 km around my training loop at Souvarnabhumi airport. It was cooler at 79F when I started my ride at 7 am. But it was very windy with a very strong side winds that seemed to be grounding the planes or at least directing them to the Southwest runway. I hunkered down in the drops and concentrated on my cadence. I completed my 100 km in 3 hr 50 min, with only two drink stops and a PB&J sandwich break. I also drank 4 L of drink mix and handful of dates.

Sunday - I took my sons out to the Siam Ocean aquarium, so no riding today.

Monday (Makha Bucha Holiday) - I rode another solo 100 km but with less wind but even hotter. I think it was 83F when I started at 7 am and was 95F with high humidity when I finished at 1030 am. I drank 5 L of drink mix and ate my half of PB&J sandwich. Then, that evening, I had to take my son to his swimming lesson so I ended up swimming another 20 laps. Now, a day later, my hamstrings feel so tight.

I got to ride only four days in Feb due to family and work responsibilities so only 400 km this month.

I hope to be able to ride at least 700 km in March because I will be going to the US for our annual family SoCal and skiing vacation from April 5-20 and I doubt that I will be able to ride in SoCal. But, I am also going to pick up my birthday present

Mark

February is not going particularly well for us either. It should be a month with a lot of cycling (it is summer, after all), but everything is so unsettled with us that getting cycling in is just not happening.
