Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Moving to Florida

Finally made the decision to move to Pensacola next week. Not exactly the cycling Mecca that I am used to in North County San Diego, but the beaches are beautiful, the water is warm and houses are cheap. If anyone here is in the area, let me know and we'll hook up for a ride.

Okaloosa Island is one of my favorite places in the panhandle. I usually visit the aviation museum while I'm up that way.

I've looked at waterfront houses there - very inexpensive compared to other parts of the county. Do a search of waterfront property and you'll find some really nice houses for a reasonable amount.

$250K for a 3BR 1800sf town house on the beach in P'Cola. Same house im Oceanside...$1M+. For what I pay in rent 20 miles from the beach in Escondido I can buy a VERY nice place on the beach in Florida.

We already have our eyes on a few. It is AMAZING how reasonably priced they are. Also, they are zoned for the #1 High School in the #2 school district in the whole state. My son's HS out here is a mess. It has always been a dream of mine (and my wife) to buy a house or townhouse on the beach in Pensacola, and now we are making it happen.

wow, your going to be living my dream.

My wife and I love that area, we live in iowa now (9 inches of new snow overnight - agh). we vacation to navarre beach most years. My most favorite bike ride is riding from Navarre Beach to Pensacola Beach and back along through the seaside park - awesome. It can get hot there, but I love riding in the heat so I think it's perfect.

looking to move there in a few years.

I'll be looking forward to some of your ride reports.

best of luck

T.

Prepare for home insurance sticker shock...if you can even get insurance.

Otherwise welcome to FL. I like to vacation in the panhandle every once in a while. Nice area.

Change out your rings for FLATLANDER riding....and if you find yourself riding south down the coast, give me a shoutout as you hit "The Bay Area", Tampa Bay that is, and I'll join up! Welcome to Florida....Hydrate and bug spray....and watch for lunatic drivers. (in your neck of the woods, Black Bears too!)

That is an issue we will have to look in to. There are lots of yearly rentals also. Might just rent for a year and see how we like it. The backup plan is to move across the bridge into Gulf Breeze. But with all the new construction going on on the beach, I'm guessing insurance is do-able.

Yep. Will probably move up to a standard crank. Problem is, the bike shops in P'Cola are fairly Spartan compared to the San Diego shops. Will probably have to do a lot of online shopping.

Used to live in Gulf Breeze till 1980. It's probably a little nicer than Pepsi Cola. I caught trout, flounder, red fish, and blue crabs from the Pepsi Cola beach bridge. Don't know if fishing is still great today.

Gulf Breeze was 99.9% white when I left. Came back in 1993 while working on the Space Shuttle program at the Kennedy Space Center and saw some racial integration at the Gulf Breeze High School. The quality of teachers back then was good enough to land me a rocket propulsion job after college.
