Flat 10 miles out
Today was going out for a ride and 10 miles out flatted. My own silly fault, didn't bring my kit with me. At any rate, when I got back replaced the tube and checked the old one.
Nothing wrong with the tire or rim tape. Old tube had two small holes (snakebite?). These are caused by inadequate tire pressure aren't they? In checking my front tire there is a good chance that my rear was only at around 80-85 lbs. Bontrager R3's rated 90-125 with only about 300 miles on them.
My own stupidity again? let me know!

Snake bite is usually a sign of a pinch flat. Whether 80 psi was enough depends on your weight. But if you hit something hard enough, you can pinch flat even at 110 psi.
My winter bike is an old tourer with 27 x 1-1/4" tires. I usually run them at 80 psi. Couple of months ago, I hit something that I didn't see, riding at night, hard enough to knock my water bottle out of the cage. Went back to get it, picked it up, got back on the bike, and found the rear had flatted. Looked at the tube in the light, the next day. Pinch flat.

Probably hit a sharp pothole or manhole cover or something. I've done both and i'm 125lb with 23c at 100psi. last summer i hit a manhole cover at 30mph and instant flat.

No manhole cover but maybe a small pothole, that's exactly what i have in my bag, before I left I didn't bring my bag since I had broken a tire lever. When I got back and opened the bag I saw that I had a brand new set, I must have replaced the broken one and not remembered . Silly

Yea.. if you hit a pot hole and had lower pressure then things could have added up. it happens. I hit one pot hole that cut my sidewall and dented the edge of my rim once.. luckily i was 2 blocks from the end of my ride and just walked it back.

So very true... I did this last week. No fault of tires or equipment, only me hitting a gravel road pothole at too high of speed. Somehow it waited to deflate all the way until I got home... but I certainly felt sluggish the last few miles and wasn't sure why.

Funny thing I had taken the bag off a couple of months ago for the hot or not thread. At any rate it's back on now with all the needed accoutrements!

This is why I have the bag to begin with, instead on having to remember to stuff my repair kit into my jersey pockets before every ride. Because the day I forget will be the day I double-flat 30 miles out.
