Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Offer some advice on first road bike, please.

I'm not sure if I should post this here or the road section, but I'm looking to buy used for up to 700. I'm going to do mostly crits with it but maybe RR's in the future. I'm looking for something stiff with aggressive handling, a lot like a Felt F75. I know 105 is the minimum I should get but I was wondering what the oldest you guys would recommend. As in if I shouldn't get anything older than 5 years.

Thank you.

There is no minimum, you can race anything that is in working order. What bike? questions are really Road forum material.

Fit is the most important thing. The F75 is a great bike.

New Tiagra is probably better than 5 year old 105.

You could get a new ride with Tiagra for under a grand. Maybe even around $700 for a NOS 2012. Take a GT GTR 3 for example. Might even get a 2012 for around $600.

I guess I'll test ride a few with Tiagra as well, but my main question was the age of a bike.

A five year old bike will be fine for racing. Like I said before, fit is the most important concern. After that, it's condition. Has it been crashed? Any dents in the tubes? Cracks in the fork? Was the steerer cut short? Are the wheels true? Are the tires worn? Does it need a tuneup? Can you work on the bike yourself? Do you have all the know-how and tools necessary? What about everything else, like pedals, shoes, helmet, kits, socks, gloves, glasses, etc? Do you have all of that now?

Used to work at a shop I know how to inspect the bike, and I can use the tools at the shop I go to. I have all the gear now since I ride track.

I guess this seems like the perfect bike since the age is okay, hopefully it's not sold already and I can negotiate the price a little.

That's a little high. The seller wants you to pay for the Ksyriums, and they aren't great wheels. You will want a different cassette for criteriums. With a compact crank, an 11-32 is way too wide. I suggest an Ultegra 11-23. You will need to shorten the chain.

Yeah I was going to tell him to lower the price since I'd have to change the chain and cassette since they're old, but now I have those reasons as well. I looked at the gears and with a compact I wouldn't be able to ride my favorite gear 52x16/78.6 inches.
