Question about bike fit from someone with no clue

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Question about bike fit from someone with no clue

I was looking at the close-out sale in my lbs and I test rode a 60 frame trek 2.1. I liked the bike but felt like I was stretched out forward too much and the stand over was pretty much pressing into me. They didn't have a 58 or 56 to try and the dealer was telling me all I need is to bring the handle bars in a bit. It was hard to tell if he was being honest or just wanted to sell me the last 60 he had. Is it better to go to a smaller size in this situation or would a stem change be all I need? It's so hard on a brief test ride. I don't want to feel like I made the wrong choice a week later.

Do not buy a bike you are not comfortable on. Based on TT hitting you crotch and reach issue, I'd say bike is too big. If salesman thinks the bike is the right size, he can slap a shorter stem on there to see if that makes you more comfortable. How tall are you?

If the stand over is touching it IS too big and you can seriously hurt yourself.

Is good to get the general idea of what size you need
Good luck and be patient with yourself to get the correct bike

Sounds too big...Sales people will routinely put riders on wrong sized bikes just to move product so be wary...

Better to err on the small side. You can always raise the saddle and get a longer stem.

Considering that was a sloping top tube bike, it sounds like it was WAY to big. You might only require a 54 cm size. On a horizontal top tube bike, you would have been "sitting on the fence" so to speak with your feet dangling in the air. Not good. Best go elsewhere and get fitted properly. Too short a stem to correct to large a frame is not desirable. At some point handling gets squirrely.
