Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What?

carrying a seat bag is carrying a seat bag, no matter your reason.

I was talking about why HTC would carry seatbags during the tour so that they can upload live PM data during the race to the interwebs which isn't the same conversation (or the topic of this thread) which is about carrying you tube/tools etc in a seatbag vs jersey pocket or other method.

I seriously doubt anyone here is pondering a seatbag for their TdF bike.

I am joining this thread, extremely late. I don't have(and won't use) a 'seat bag'. I do have a bag that 'velcroves' to the down tube, and the cross tube. I keep my locks in there. While I also wear a hippack that I will have my cellphone, emergency contact info, spare tube, tire lever, and patch kit, in. I want to get a GPS-enabled cycle computer, that will do more than do more than the GPS-tracking of the Garmin Edge 200. So I can be found, if I can't call for help.

The only thing I put in jersey pockets are things I might need access to without stopping - food, maybe a map/cue sheet, sometimes my phone. Everything else goes in a seat bag (Lezyne S Caddy). Its quiet, I never know its there. I don't have to keep up with it or pack it or worry about forgetting it. Its always there, on the bike. To keep the bag extra minimal, I Velcro the tire lever to the underside of the saddle.

I'll quit using a seat bag when I have a team car with spare wheel and a team mechanic following me.

Bob,

If you don't mind me saying that I started the thread and the question was 'do you carry a seat bag?' not 'what do you carry in your seat bag?' and what items justify carrying a seat bag.

I know, semantics, but the question was who does/doesn't carry a seat bag.

My jersery pockets are often full with food, clothing and lighting batteries. No room for tubes etc. Seat bags are great.

Sidenote: I've seen Chris Horner race in the ToC with a spare tubular and micropump.

So, let me get this straight: the answers you were soliciting were basically just the poster's name and "Yes, I do" or "No, I don't." Is that right? Show of hands? What, do you have a bet with your wife or something?

not at all... I was just saying arguing semantics and saying it doesn't count because it doesn't have a tube in it seems silly.

I jump back and forth between bikes with regularity, as I ride my road bikes by myself, or in group rides, and I ride the Cannondale tourer or mountain bike with my bikes. I do not want to have two bags, two sets of tools, or repack each time, so I carry one road tube and one mtb tube, tools, inflator, etc and just move the bag from bike to bike.

Me, I'm a seat bag man. Not too big but not tiny either. Just big enough for 2 tubes, a multi-tool, tire levers, and my small cell phone. I will say, that a bagless bike does look cool; however, I don't like my jersey pockets stretched downward or outward with anything more than 1 - 2 Clif Bars.

With me a long ride by myself in the boonies mean a seat pack. A shorter ride or a group training ride on my good bike means no pack. Everything fits in my jersey. Why drool over nice bikes and then hang a little suitcase under the saddle?

Sorry, I have nothing to say now.

Because carrying a tube, lever and CO2 in your jersey pocket sucks. Its does for me anyway - I have less tolerance for it the hotter it gets. I'm not a fashion victim.

Good thought. So I'll change my reply to if you drool and lust over Harley chics, why have ...I forgot what I was going to say...my mind went to a Harley chic with no bra and leather pants.

Not a racer, just want to have all the stuff on the bicycle and not find myself solo 50 miles out of town with no cell phone reception and no tools. I can't even remember to switch one saddlebag between different bikes, and I never could remember to put everything in my jersey pockets. So I have everything duplicated on every one of my bikes, multiple saddlebags, multiple multitools, multiple minipumps, etcetera... It's worth it to me.

Put everything in one pouch, like a Lezyne, and leave it inside your helmet with gloves. Won't for it unless you forget your helmet.

Every time I see a dog's b*lls swinging back and forth, I will think, why doesn't he strap it to his seat post?

Not sure who you are addressing here, but I carry all that I need to fix those problems and many more in the zip pouch that fits neatly in my center pocket. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. - Robert
