I have been trying to convince this board to stop using that silly term for years now, but to no avail.
"clipless" is the most undescriptive word ever conceived, I believe, as it says the exact opposite of what it does.
In Belgium we call them "klikpedalen", which is basically "click pedals".
"Click Pedals" is shorter than "clipless pedals" and it describes exactly what they do.
People who use the term "clipless pedals" could also start calling their cars "horseless chariots".

I've bought a lot of stuff this year building "The last bike I'll ever have" (according to my wife), I think though the single best thing would be my second set of wheels that I bought specifically for a Fondo and winter use.
Tubeless wheels with 23mm wide rim. Riding at 85lbs make a world of difference and having ridden on 10+miles of dirt gravel road on 25c tires comfortably with no worries of flatting... Best single change in ride feel

Traditional road pedals had toe clips and the shoes had a slotted cleat:
In the mid 1980's, various versions of click-in pedals came out. They were called clipless because you could be connected to the bike without toe clips.
I agree the current usage is somewhat confusing and calling clipless pedals click-ins probably makes sense.
Ergo, it is not going to happen any time soon.

But.... but.... a "toe clip" is in no way shape or form a "clip".
Anyway. Just semantics.

"a device, typically flexible or worked by a spring, for holding an object or objects together or in place."
So both types of pedals technically utilize clips.
"Clipless" pedals/shoes are the best thing I bought for my bike, btw.
Second would be a simple computer for speed.

MotoACTV (although I did not buy specifically for my bike, but running as well, it now is used primarily with my new road bike).
Pity they discontinued it. Battery will last through a full marathon and them some, or a century depending on your time.
Always on speedometer with an excellent clipping mechanism so you can put it wherever you want and constantly see your distance and speed.
GPS tracks your route. You can race yourself later, see yourself on a map on the device, see your route on google maps later, track your progress, rate your workouts, post to Facebook, etc.
Built in 8GB of MP3 storage, headphone output or bluetooth for the headset/speaker of your choice.
Ant+ comparability AND bluetooth 4.0 LE compatability. Works with HR monitors and speed/cadence sensors from Garmin and others, works with power meters, will do its GPS thing, monitoring your heart rate and other sensors while simultaneously sending stereo music via bluetooth to your nice wireless headphones, telling you information about your workout and reminding you to hydrate as you go, tracking which songs correlate to your best performance so you can see and use that data later, all without needing ANYTHING from your smartphone unless you want to view texts, alarms, or other alerts from your cellphone on your watch/bike speedometer.
Why am I going on about this? Because I'm pissed off that they discontinued it and that every single new device that is being released or has been released since the MotoACTV completely pales in comparison. These new "smartwaches" either completely rely on your cellphone for everything (GPS data, music, etc.) OR have less functionality (a la TomTom).
I hope mine never dies. I will probably shed tears when it does unless someone actually makes a device that competes with it. Its MSRP was $200-250 I believe. Newer smartwatches cost MORE and do far LESS.

You can still pick up a bit of remaining inventory at etailers here and there, as well as refurbished and used, but it has been officially discontinued and there is no current other product out there that truly replaces it. The TomTom multisport is the closest thing I've seen.
Edit: Honestly, I'm hoping the new Google/Moto will pursue another great smartwatch venture. If anyone can knock it out of the ballpark, it will be them. They've got the top notch hardware and software clout to do it.

I have upgraded wheels, drivetrain, saddle, and tires on my 2010 Allez, and none made a more noticeable difference than the set of Koolstops.
