Why Do you Choose to Not Wear Gloves?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I actually need gloves when i'm going for a ride with lots of coblestones in it. Because when i don't wear them, i get blisters all over my hands because of the harsh vibrations.

I had no idea there was a safety aspect to wearing gloves, I always just thought they were for comfort.

I wear padded gloves on every ride, without fail. On one ride I forgot them and both of my hands were covered in blisters after 5 miles. To me, gloves are more necessary than shorts or a jersey.

Safety aspect: when people fall, they tend to put their arms out to protect them, and fall on their hands. Better to abrade a pair of gloves than to leave some skin on the road.

I don't think that I've ever met anyone who "planned" on crashing.

Well, climbers also wear gloves - tape gloves for crack climbing or insulated gloves for ice/snow.

My old school gloves had an open back and left the coolest oval tan spots on the backs of my hands. Can't find that style any more as most good gloves don't have velcro closure or close on the inside of the wrist with a closed back. Good conversation starter with the ladies at the bar.

Better to not put your hands out. keep them on the bars, then roll "go with the flow" when you hit the ground.

My last crash tore up the back of one glove. My hands were still on the bars when I went down.

For me, it is riding with gloves all the time. If I am on the bike, I am wearing them.

I feel that they provide better grip, ability to wipe my face better, but the most important thing is protection for my palms in case of crashing.
I crashed enough times to appreciate not having painful and bloody injuries that take forever to heal you can get even from minor slides across road surface.

I am actually quite amazed when I see serious riders without gloves.
But, I guess some people don't like the feeling (shrugs).

Not wear gloves because they always seem to cause more numbness and blisters than they prevent, so when crashing I always try to land head-first.

Seriously, I have probably spent 500 bucks over the last several years trying every imaginable glove. I would much prefer to be ABLE to wear them, for all the reasons cited in previous post. I havent been able to find a pair that didn't increase numbness. i've even tried golfing gloves, batting gloves, you name it.

I wear gloves for safety and warmth. On the odd day I don't wear gloves, the feeling is fantastic, quite natural. like direct access to the shifters and more feel on the bars. But its rare for me to go gloveless. If I fall, my hands will certainly be involved.

I've crashed a few times. Once I crashed without gloves and my whole hand was tore up, once with them on and I just got some bruising.

Lately I've been wearing full fingered light gloves. I like the feeling of wearing gloves tbh.

I wear lightly padded gloves because I get hand numbness. Any crash protection is a bonus.

Always used them and discovered last season how comfortable it is to ride without..

This thread is making me doubt the safety of that now!

I prefer mountain passes, but you should see rush hour traffic. With no freeway traffic the nearest pass (Snoqualmie) is an hour's drive, but it's twice as far on a weekday afternoon. The more interesting ones are a few hour's drive, each way. So I wind up dodging traffic on city streets, mostly the neighborhood ones with gardens and fewer cars. I just don't post ride reports about it, because it's kind of boring terrain.

I'm not saying this to argue, I just don't want you to think I'm cooler than I really am.

But if anybody would like to donate to the Get Forrest Out of Dodge fund, I'd love an early retirement.
